I'll agree with you on speakers but not on amps.

But I get your analogy to wine prices and WS scores.

Amplifier difficult to be distinguished to me are: UCD, Hypex, Purifi, Benchmark, Icepower, Pascal, TI (tpa3255...and other Chipamp in proper design),.. Many others, expensive and acclaimed, (Pass or any Tube) are full of flavors.
So yes, I agree; many amps are like wine but some of them are so good that everyone will agree, no need to choice, I’m happy whatever I get: vosne romanee, chambolle musigny, Sassicaia, Masseto, Latour, Margaux,(and many many other) ...
