Mono sound over multiple Sonos speakers would work fine for instance.
In fact, I think we often don't realise many venues (bars, restaurants, clubs) have this kind of setup.

I agree with those who suggest a series of three or four Bluetooth speakers that connect to a single network.
Three JBL PartyBox 120s for less than €300 each, and I think you'd fill a very large space with powerful, fun music.

Yes, although you can make some kind of stereo by alterning L and R speakers (but it might sound weird in the middle of the room)

I bit the bullet and went the Sonos route. Started with a Move so I can just take it wherever we are.

I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised. Bass response is obviously missing but it doesn't try to fake it like most bluetooth speakers I've heard. Mids and treble are really impressive for what it is.

I think optimizing for mobility, so it can always be fairly nearfield and on-axis was a good call.

This was a fun journey.
