Guns

Enough to outfit a small revolution in a Zouth Amerikan country.

Indeed. :) To much of the western world, America is an exceedingly strange place. Runs neck and neck with Japanese game shows. :D

Guns was the obvious one, but another (much smaller) difference that clued me in is his usage of "hifi gear". We(Americans) tend to use hifi more often as an adjective, while across the pond, ya'll often use hifi as a noun.

I have a great hifi system at home
vs.

I am old (80) and the cumulative amount would be an embarrassment to think about, much less post!
The cumulative amount would require a spreadsheet. I have two piles of stuff: the fixit pile and the don't-have-a-place-for-it pile. The latter should be sold off, but I seem to be lazy about that. I'd rather find a new room that needs a sound system.

We just constructed a new "barn", which has a second floor that will be used for "farm operations." No "farm operation" would be complete without a music system. And no "barn" activity would be unenhanced by the presence of music to distract from the mundane. I won't say that I needed an additional building to provide two more spots for sound systems, but I will take advantage of it.

Well, yeah, take all my gear together, it would be a big number. We have the kind of house where having different setups around makes some sense, fortunately. (Probably a bit fewer than I have deployed, but oh well, my wife is very tolerant.) Most of my setups are $1000 or less. At some point, I am going to sell off a number of old receivers and speakers and begin to consolidate. We're about 8 years out from downsizing and whatever home we have next, I certainly will not be able to fit/use this pile... I've always liked having backup equipment, but I've reached the limit. Trying to curtail buying CDs and records too to just things that have very, very high replay use or are unavailable via streaming (like some of the 70s direct to disc jazz stuff)...

My office setup is less expensive:

Pioneer BS22LR speakers
Adcom GFA535
Kenwood C1 Basic preamp
Cambridge Audio D500SE CD player
NuForce DAC (mediocre one from Drop but it still sounds okay)
Technics SL20 turntable with Grado cartridge
Yamaha cassette deck
