This new 2x9” side-firing subwoofer, only 11” on a side, has 1,200 watts (4k peak) of amplification, advanced DSP controlled by an app, and claims 20Hz -3dB. All for $999 MSRP. A pair of these could probably fill a grand room… if it’s all true. I haven’t seen any SPL specs reported.

Has anybody heard it? Can someone send to @amirm to test, please! Could this mean subwoofers are “solved”?

I have previous 3000 micro with 8" drivers and a bit less powerful amp. Not currently in use as don't have a need for it any more. It used to be a dedicated sub for the center channel and was doing a great job as such. It was getting the signal that rolled off very steeply at 30hz.

What you get out of subs in your room will vary greatly. In rectangular medium sized rooms 2 of the new micros could work well, especially if not chasing high SPL in lowest end (like 115dB at 20hz). If chasing reference volume at 20hz, then you might want to move up the SVS model chain to make sure you get it, and at reasonable distortion.

We apparently don't hear distortion below 25hz, so lots of SVS subs are designed so that distortion skyrockets at this point. As any sub, when turned up, distortion will raise in the entire range. There are lots of discussions as to how audible this is in e.g. sub 80hz range. Some people, for a peace of mind - if nothing else, oversize the sub setup so they are left with headroom where each sub is not being driven hard so they stay in lower distortion range.

As far as pair of them filling the grand room (say 70m2) - quite unlikely. There is a reason why they are called micro. You could stack more of them to fill the grand room, but then could also buy a pair of bigger subs that would likely do a better job in comparison. Another practical consideration is that most AVRs and AVPs have limited number of independent sub outputs. So for example, with upper tier D&M offering you get 4 subs out, so plan should really be to get 4 subs that take you where you want to be.

Perhaps “grand” was an overstatement! I have a room that’s about 4,000 cu ft, maybe 1/3 smaller than the size you mentioned. I suspect 2 of these would fill that. The side-firing aspect could also help with the nulls. But again, no SPL figures are yet available AFAIK. They claim prodigious THD results from the DSP but, again, testing is needed.

If you have any subs currently in that room, than once results are available for new micros you could extrapolate what they could do for you.

My room is 7k+ cu ft, irregularly shaped and multi purpose. 2 SVS PC 4000 (cylinder version of PB 4000) could really not do a convincing job for reference levels. Added two biggest Arendals (1723 2Vs) and now quite oversized and run those four at 50-60% volume. SPL is fine, but even with all the box volume, 6 13"+ drivers and almost 5kW in amps, there is virtually no useful output below 20hz - courtesy of the room.

What output would you like to have “useful” below 20 Hz?

I am not infrasonic guy, so in my case I am fine without sub 20hz output. Was just illustration of how room affects the sub output. In a different room, 4 of these subs could go flat to 15hz. While 5hz seems a tiny difference, that's half octave between 10-20hz, so in reality not so tiny.

Another thing is that best bass EQ system, Dirac ART, also supports only up to 20hz. You can pass through infrasonics as well, but it won't be as well controlled. In addition to choosing the right subs, it is also really important to choose the right way to bass manage and EQ them.

I'll be curious to see if it's better than my old Velo DD-12. The new Micro 3000 has slightly more driver surface area. I strongly believe that these tiny subs are strictly for apartment, condo, and small office dwellers.

I bought the new 3000 because the older gen lacks under 30hz. It's there, but quiet in my room. The 3000 R solves that issue. Made my jaw drop. Using for music and movies in a master bed room paired with 5.1 Ascend Acoustics Luna v2. The 3000 R sounds equal to, if not better than my sb1000 pro. I don't have any measurement tools just playing some test tones through and app and my usual audiophile test tracks such as Geoff Castellucci's - Sound of Silence. Theres a particular bass sweep that the previous gen 3000 couldn't get. The 3000 R did it well.

For reference, I have a custom made 15" ported woofer in a 5 ft3 box powered with a 700 watt speakerpower amp. I know what sub should sound like. No the micro 3000 doesn't have the headroom of the 15", but for it's size, its really impressive. I'd love to hear their higher end stuff.

The video is awful, sorry, but the bass is...fun. Listen in for the sweep around 53 seconds in

That’s great to hear. Mine delivering tomorrow and should take measurements this weekend.

I've been really wanting to sample one of these. I have one small spot left I could fit it in...

But they you will need ART agin to integrate? I would not bother with this one at all if happy with what you have, as i understand you are. If creating problems, better to choose a bit bigger sub.

No Art. It would be with a pair of G Threes at my office space. Probably would use DiracLive and a DDRC-24

If my math is correct, switching from 2 8-inch drivers to 2 9-inch drivers increases the total driver area by over 25%. And since they upped the amp power and kept it all in the same size cabinet, I'm impressed.

In the exact same cabinet size, yeah.

What model is the black one, and does it have a balance port?
