Surround Sound Speaker Level Test Sources

Hi!

I own an admittedly older JVC surround Pro Logic receiver that has its own speaker level test tones built-in. Basically it plays what sounds like Pink or White noise into each speaker, for 1 second at a time. I would use a SPL meter, to adjust the levels until I got approx. the same level on the meter from all four (Left, Center, Right, Surround) channels.

Here is where it gets interesting:

I get different setting results when I use different sources for the Pro Logic(original not Pro Logic II) test tones:

From the receiver itself, I must boost both Center and Surround channels by several dB, so the tone coming from them matches what comes from each main, according to the sound level meter.

From tones on-line, or on DVD picture and sound setup discs, I might not have to boost at all.

My question:

Which should I trust - the receiver/amp built-in test utility, or, external sources of test tones?

Administration/Moderation if you feel that a better audience might exist in another category, you are welcome to relocate my inquiry there.
