I bought SurgeX sa-1080 a couple of years ago for $450 on a sale by Gramophone, back then, retail was $595

Then, it went up to $650 and now is $769 everywhere, is not just one website, everywhere

Its literally the same device, that's just greed, but probably because of the tariffs lol

Fun fact about power supplies: you don't even really need them.

Even a power amplifier has what, 48V rails?
With a lead acid powerbank of 8 x 7Ah 12V batteries that's 13.8 x 4 = 55.V rails, switch off and they trickle charge, switch on and the mains is disconnected and it runs from pure battery power..

I don't really 'get' this high end power stuff: Batteries will always be better. My MUSE M980-BT hifi-boombox has a lipo in it - and I guess that has the world's best PSU when in operation too - a battery :)

Even 450 is already ridiculous for this. This is not more than a powerstrip with a fuse, a current limiter and a EMI/RFI filter and it should not cost more than 50$/€. If you pay more for this, you're ripped off.
Gee and here I thought the Emperor's clothes looked so nice!

Used to be an independent company with manufacturing here in NC. Now I see they are part of Ametek. That could account for some of the price increase. Just another layer of mgmt that has to get paid.

Not really lol

Much cheaper to do whole home protection these days.

A proper surge protector - like I outlined above - for about £20, can be programmed to cut out at various over-voltages, and will stay open for a programmable delay time, thus protecting all your stuff.
You can ever get it to cut out at lower voltages too.

This will not just protect against fast surges, but even if the utility company accidentally sends too much voltage out one day.

thanks for the broken link
The correct link is here:

The archive of the old link in the WayBack Machine only had page 1 of the article. I added a capture of the current link with all 3 pages.
