Superman 2025 Movie - worst ever!

Maybe not - but where's the modern equivalent in terms of quality? It just isn't there.

A lot of junk got made in the past, I know. But used to be almost every year there would be at least one great film. So far the 21st century has totally failed to deliver.
? We all have our tastes

Star Wars first trilogy
Tombstone (RIP, Val Kilmer)
Avengers (most all)
Rooster Cogburn
True Grit (1969)

Star Wars first trilogy

You mean that first trilogy with Jar Jar Binks and the Anakin who doesn't like sand? You must be joking!

I would have named all of Quentin Tarantino's movies to counter the argument that there are no great films in the 21st century. And i'll throw in Blade Runner 2049 as being particularly excellent as well.

Heat is a better movie than Chinatown, prove me wrong ;)
Both great films. Watched 'Heat' just the other week.

I'm trying to pick films that have the qualities that have been lacking in recent decades.

My definition of a good film - one you can and will watch more than once.

A great film - one you can watch any number of times. The sort of film where you turn on the TV and it's half-way through already but you're still almost compelled to watch it to the end. I did that with 'Jaws' the other night.

There's certainly been a few 'good' films in the past 30 years but I'm struggling to think of a single one I'd put in the 'great' category.

21st century? They're all old except the Avengers so I'm guessing you agree with me? ;)

Oh hell no, he didn't really arrive till the 4th movie, Phantom Menace and was rapidly sent to the gallows. LOL

I think we are digressing as usual. But yeah, true that Star Wars and Marvel original series were great movies in their own right. It's not rocket science but excellent entertainment, occasionally with some food for thought.

But what's new about that? No more Star Wars and we get Terminators, sorry Thunderboalts instead of Avengers? I'd much rather have Ethernals that apparently did not go with the flow. Original story, better cast etc?

Heat came out in '95 so arguably just makes the cut for "great" movies of the past 30 years.

For my part I'd put up No Country for Old Men, Parasite, O Brother, Where Art Thou, Whiplash, Uncut Gems, Wall-E, The Royal Tenenbaums and There Will Be Blood as movies that are too good to be called merely "good"... but I haven't even seen a lot of the films on various "top 100 of the 21st century" lists, these are just ones I could personally speak to.

With that list, all your taste is in your mouth :)

Here's a REAL list... In no particular order.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction
Lord of The Rings Trilogy
Forrest Gump
Apocalypse Now
2001 A Space Odyssey
Alien
Jurassic Park
Django Unchained

Not sure what the Jurassic park had do to with the above, but seems like a good top 100 list contenders.

I take it you're familiar with cinema prior to the last 30 years or so?

If so how can you say that standards are still as good when you go back and watch classics like 'Chinatown' or 'The Maltese Falcon'?

They couldn't get those scripts made today. The only reason they churn out this superhero schlock is because investors feel secure that at least they won't lose money even if they don't make much. That trough will dry up eventually too, just like it did with westerns.
Of course I am, just not the schlock that was made in every decade. It seems you forgot about the garbage that was made back then. Go watch The Bellboy and the Playgirls and tell me with a straight face that it really shows the standards they had back then.

You are just recycling the same argument that I hear when people tell me today's music sucks. Its just old man yells at cloud nonsense.

Want some suggestions? Here's some:
  • Gisaengchung
  • The Sound of Metal
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
  • Whiplash
  • A Separation
  • Moonlight
  • The Father
  • Incendies
  • Gone Girl
  • The Florida Project
  • The Lighthouse
  • The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Portrait of a Lady on Fire
I'd even argue that today more good movies are made than ever before simply because it is much cheaper to produce a movie.

Edit: I'd argue that the Lord of The Rings Trilogy is the best trilogy of all time. No three films come close.

There's an old saying... the play is the same only the actors change. This applies to movies, as well as life in general really.

There are only so many types of story to tell.

JSmith

Did not watch the Game of Thrones review nor I will, because I have my own view of it - 10/10. But if he managed to review 8 seasons in 2 hours that sounds pretty efficient.
It's both a masterpiece (around 60 hours of some of the best TV has to offer) and a disaster in my view..
He hated the ending so much that he still hasn't reviewed the last episode.
And sadly the books will never be completed..

I'm looking forward to seeing Jurassic World Rebirth this week.
Specially since the lead female is my heart throb Scarlett Johansson.. OMG yum.

Well, the story never ends well in the real world, and it is largely a history of disaster in the longer run.

I think they kept it too soft in the end, but that's the usual practice. It might have been more "punishing" than most.

Scarlett can't make a bad movie . IMO.

Still I'm hoping for a lot of blood and people getting eatin.

Well, there is always the saying that winter will come. Some might even survive the sequel if lucky enough :D. But what we get is another thing. Not too bad either.

Even as a huge fan of Ghost in the Shell (1995) and her personal attributes notwithstanding, AND even though I was stuck on a plane for 4 hours, I turned that movie off after 20 minutes. What a travesty.

If I was a superhero...

1. I would not remotely feel compelled to wear a tight lycra Lululemon outfit on my superhero assignments, and capes would be totally out of question.

2. I'd not blindly fly into traps, I'd do some homework beforehand.

3. I'd consider filing for mental disability if I ever thought putting a suit and glasses on utterly disguises my identity.

4. I'd ditch Lois Lane or recommend she visits an eye doctor very urgently. She's either stupid or blind.
I think you would be good at Cinema Sins ;)

This guy is the definition of media illiteracy (lets not got started on his thinly veiled racism, homophobia and misogyny).
I watch both Critical Drinker, Pitch Meeting and others - in moderation and at times, when in "need" of entertainment, to learn - and learning is not cherry-picking your favorites - I'm not taking anything as written in stone, I try to make my own opinion. And don't we all know how easily we're manipulated through our own journey through life?
Found a video with a different angle on Drinker, which seems fair and level-headed:
