Watched Superman 2025 today. It has to be the worst version I have ever seen of Superman. It's possible the monkeys featured in the movie were used to hype it's rating on Rotten Tomatoes?

Why is it the worst?
Superman is the hero of hero's. The only thing that can stop him is Kryptonite.
In this silly movie, Superman is portrayed as a weak flying hero whose bones can be broken and he can easily lose fights.
In DC Comics and past movies: Nothing beats Superman, that's the entire character attraction. You can't x-ray him and find damaged body parts. In this film, Superman is continually being hurt and beat up. It's the dumbest depiction of Superman ever. Not to mention, the Justice League never shows up to help and the actress playing Lois totally fails to meet the part. You can't transplant Mrs Maisel into Lois Lane and expect it to be believable. Add Green Lantern's bizarre bowl haircut and personality and you start to see this movie as a slap in the face of anyone who grew up with Superman or Super hero's. The film also depicts Super Girl as a drunk just for the fun of it. It's a slap in the face to anyone who grew up with these characters.

I give this movie a "D" rating for totally DUMB.

Huh... interesting take, with some spoilers to boot.

I've read other reviews and forums where people are saying this is excellent.

I thought the trailer looked good... for yet another Superman movie;

JSmith

I wish they'd move on from the MCU/DCU stuff. I grew up with George Reeves doing Superman on tv....most are better than that, but it's still overdone in general. I can't imagine going to a theater to see the newest one.

Agreed, they are about to butcher the Fantastic 4 with a new movie next. Saw the previews before Superman 2025. Not something I would want to pay to watch.

Yeah I've seen the other iterations...and the previews for the new one. The whole superhuman thing is like zombies.....overused.

The movie was okay, better than the last two attempts at the character in my opinion.

It is also very true to the comics I grew up reading (for the most part, the new incarnation of Supergirl is a more recent development).

The bowl cut Green Lantern is Guy Gardner, who’s on-screen incarnation I’m familiar with from the often hilarious late 80s comic “Justice League International”.

This is why I never follow any threads on ASR other then the equipment reviews. The hyper negative comments that appear here (and admittedly elsewhere) of genre film and tv content seem to indicate that a portion of the posters here suffer from clinical levels of depression.

I saw the movie today. As a comic fan in the 50's 60's and 70's, the various iterations of Superman (and other DC and Marvel characters) have taken wild swings with plot, powers, character development because they're...............F'n comic books. They are not supposed to be any one definitive take. They get reinvented based on the current set of sociological influences. Remember Superman with a mullet? I've seen every film and TV version of Kal-El. The 1978 version was outstanding because of it's era. Does it look kind of silly today? Of course, because we as an audience are wildly different in 2025.

Finally, I liked it as a current iteration and I look forward to more of Gunn's efforts. I would suggest to anybody else, who's reaction is this hysterical, seek professional help because other aspects of your life are probably just as derailed.

It's an OK popcorn movie
Generally I don't like when there are too many superheroes though, tends to become messy and a lot of them have no chance to have a decent story really in any way at all.
If Batman was introduced into this he'd quickly become too weak among meta humans. And some say there is a Gotham City road sign in the movie..

Limitations are otherwise interesting, I tend to think Superman is rather dull because he's just too good. Same with Captain Marvel.

In any case. It's not important... I had been more interested in a continuation to Justice League where it seems they are against impossible odds, losing big time

Maybe Super girl is more to my liking. She's supposed to be a complete mess. Now, if they just can make a movie where she's the actual focus though... we'll see..

The sequence towards the end is the opening setup to the Supergirl movie which will be based on the comic "Supergirl - Woman of Tomorrow". It'll be more of a space adventure, with her partying it up on other planets then meeting an alien girl that needs help - "True Grit" being an inspiration behind the original comic.

The partying seems to be a coping mechanism though? And then she needs to sober up? Not going to look into the source material as I hope they might improve on it somehow..

Humm reallly? It's getting fairly good audience reviews?
I'll watch it on streaming video when it's available
I do want to see the new Jurassic World and F! one big screen first.

The original Superman from old comic and cartoons did take a beating and found strength to prevail and win, not trying to say movie is good, didn't see it yet effect should be good and I don't expect story to begin with. Unfortunately we have re repits on original scripts and even sum summarised serials in single shot (movie) increasingly recently. That doesn't mean they are all bad but they are certainly disappointing to those still having vivid memory of originals.

Exactly my thoughts. One indestructible being punching another indestructible being isn't exciting or interesting, especially when they do it for 20 straight using huge amounts of CGI.

I Saw it last weekend.

What to say,
It's not terrible, but definitely not great! and it's extra sad that the best iteration of the character is still Superman 1978, and (to my opinion!) the 2nd best is the Television show Superman and Lois.
As for the Henry Cavil version, i might even prefer that one, at least he was only a wimp as Clark Kent, but not as Superman, as it should be!

I'm way more interested in the new Batman movie, The Batman 2, that is, not the upcoming James Gunn version after seeing this.

How many times can they warm over this same, tired crap?

The 1978 film wasn't great but at least it had a bit of charm in the writing and performances.

They aren't able to do that today because the talent just isn't there anymore.

Won't bother with it even when it comes on the telly.

The only way we can ever get rid of this tiresome superhero crap and get back to having at least some proper films is when everyone stops going to see it. Don't be part of the problem.

We should not forget the majority of superhero movies are based on comic books.

JSmith
Yes, and there are many many absolutely GREAT comic books/ Graphic novels, turning them into great Live-action movies is the trick, but not impossible, as we had already more than a couple examples of such.
Spider-Man 2 (with Doc Ock) ; X2 ; Watchmen ; Iron Man (1st.) ; Captain America - The Winter Soldier.

Forgot a couple , Logan ; all 3 Deadpool movies:)
some more to add, Batman Trilogy , The batman, and (no Movie, but still) Daredevil (Netflix series)

pass on this superman i don't even watch the rebooted blu 4k rubbish atmos anymore there nowhere near as good as , superman the movie 1978 that has stood the test of time , do not care for cgi reboots , i never seen any of those marvel guardians thank goodness i have sixth sense the james gunn superman would be rubbish , not even cared to even go near the bh2 odeon , cinema as lost its way and appeal with me , cinema is just like home cinema now , you may sit in an auditorium with some woke movie and its hardly full ,

superman the movie never had this much hate in 1978 1979 , the new superman reboot had so much hate in less than 24hrs lol
superman the movie , saw three times in large screen ! it ran for months , ( not like these woke today a week or so and then its gone ) superman 1978 raun for months in larger screen then moved to smaller screen ( to make way for another movie ) downstairs 2 , it played for few more months , it was hugely popular from uk december to 1979
now the theatrical mix available on 4k six-track Dolby Stereo for flashback , i run the 1978 and nothing else that is cgi or ai those have no place here anymore , originals only !

john williams and the LSO delivers super brass !

is so hard to find the original and not that remixed with the over done " 2000 whooosh " this has the softer whoosh , like how the opening is done on a projection screen with academy ratio b/w in mono and then goes to LCR stereo and then academy ratio changing to scope and colour like the scene in wizard of oz when dorthy opens the door and goes to technicolour , when the richard donner credit comes up on the screen the split stereo surrounds engages with baby boom rumbling the room deeply in THX , that is very masterful sound mixing move
1min 37sec when the superman " s " bursts whoosh on the screen i get super flashback goosebumps

even ricjhard donner commented the john williams music you can hear the music saying " superman " that is what gets an audience cheering and applauding

when i run superman here , i use the five screen wide L Lc C Rc R to make it epic in THX , directional dialog on the original mix , the stereo surrounds have a brilliant mixing and i use a few additional to make it memorable , i mean even the cinema seats come alive in sound SAS , and the boom channel superbass

I am not going to the cinema often. Although as a movie fanatic, I watch almost every movie release at home in a nice setup. This was for me and my wife just a nice popcorn movie (sound and action) as mentioned earlier. We had fun. Up to the next.
