Note that the square brackets glyph is a toggle -- click on it once to turn it off (which you may have already done, @Balle Clorin), click it again to turn it back on. The brackets turn gold color when "BB code" is turned off.
BB = "bulletin board" -- with "BB code" turned on, the proper code for italics, bold, font size/color, image attachment, etc. are all inserted for us when one of the 'buttons' at the top of the editor panel are selected. Otherwise, those codes can be inserted manually. There are times that the latter comes in handy, FWIW... but (as usual) I digress.
