Subwoofer to pair with my Genelec 8050as

Hi everyone.

I’ve got a pair of 8050as. They sound great and their LF response is also great, but they don’t have enough power and start clipping pretty early in the bass region, just like amir said in his review.

I do quite a few party’s with them, small scale so nothing crazy, but I do end up having to cut out most of the bass below 80Hz because they can’t handle reproducing that at high SPLs.

So the logical conclusion is to buy a subwoofer! I could buy something cheap that gets loud but I’d quite like to have something that’s on a similar level to the speakers them selves in terms of tonality and distortion.

I’ve been looking at the 7070a and it’s pretty perfect for the task, high SPL (not looking for a PA sub that gets louder as the 8050as don’t get louder than 105-110db at 1m), great LF extension and very good distortion measurements. The only issue is I can’t find any for sale in the UK.

Has anyone got any suggestions of any other subs I should buy that will pair well with my genelecs. I really don’t want something that ‘sounds bad’ when compared to my 8050as.

These should go low enough for most party music - why not look for an additional pair second-hand?

They go low enough but not loud enough.

Above 100Hz they can get very loud but below 100Hz they clip much sooner than the rest of their frequency range and at parties they need to be as loud as possible!

Can't you adjust the volume? At moderate volume, the distortion will be moderate. I have 4x18 "PA" subwoofers in my apartment. No ports.

I could get PA subs but they won’t sound as good as a Genelec or studio sub. Yes they will be louder but my 8050as are the limiting factor so I don’t need anything over 110db RMS really.

Plus the studio subs will go lower, and the distortion charts in the 7070a are insanely good.

Only thing is I can’t find one online to buy.
