Hello everyone.. new member but been using asr for years.

Basically I will explain my current setup..
I run a denon avc x4700h with full meqx upgrade as my amp and run it for my av media centre..
I'm running it on auro 3d for music listening as the system is fully eq'd

Now here's the bit I'm changing.. currently I'm running a single 18 JBL 2242h driver In the JBL 4645c box and it's ported and being powered by a hypex fa502 amp which bridged give the sub 1krms or I can do 500 or 600w at 4ohm per channel if I remember correctly...

I love the JBL as when it's been set up it's a fantastic performer but times have changed and I need to change the system a bit..for now speakers are all staying the same focal system until I move over to kef meta...
But I have been looking at going to 2 X 12s for my subs on the sides of the room for eq reasons and have been looking at a few drivers. Mostly the dayton audio ultimax 12 but this is a DIY option and Im not opposed to that but I would rather buy a sub and cabinet in one of possible or is there any other drivers you helpful lot would recommend... It needs to be as good as the JBL with the 2 subs. Obviously I have the denon with the full eq pack so I can run everything to eq them correctly

So what are your recommendations for a driver / drivers or subs ? Must be passive
And has to be 12s or smaller for a sealed enclosure?
Hope this is explained correctly..
Tia

I should also add I'm after a very flat response after EQ and obviously they need to be low distortion.

What's meqx? I have a 4700 and not familiar with any upgrade particularly. If going sealed keep in mind you'll need amp power for the necessary eq. As to a pre-built box matching up to the driver, you'd probably want to model it first with appropriate software.

Have a Google mate it's just the top version of EQ you can buy. Gives you more control than standard audsey

Also I have plenty of amp power with the hypex fa502... I can do bridged 1krms
As regards to box I can get boxes built for me hence keeping sealed for the 2 subs as for example the Dayton audio ultimax 12 works in something like a 1.7cube box sealed for best measurements.

Yea I'm UK and I know of the bk subs but not quite what in after from what I can find measurements wise

I use a pair of the 12" BK XXLS400FFs and am very happy with them.
If you contact BK direct they will should be able to advise you on possible options.
From what I can make out you will be hard pressed to get better value for money in the UK.

These are good however I don't have the same level of control with active as I have with the hypex amplifier

If you like the JBL punch, the closest sealed 12" I’ve heard that keeps that same energy is the Dayton UM12-22. You’ll lose a bit of sheer SPL, but gain tightness and cleaner decay. Pairing two on a Hypex plate is a solid move.

This is the sort of answer I was hoping for... My JBL is my dream subwoofer but due to the room I need to change to 2 subs and the ultimax seems to fit the bill. The only downside is it's a new driver now and annoyingly they are not shipping with a sealed enclosure DIY kit at the moment

Have you tried some 12" subs on the sides of your room and proven to yourself that it works better than what you have now? The current sub you have now is much better than anything based on Dayton drivers. JBL drivers are among the best of the best, Dayton's are good for the money. You "might" pick up some "measured smoothness" with 2 subs but even with that you might not prefer how it sounds. I would definitely try to test your idea before you invest as you may very well be taking a step backwards.

From the way my room measures I will be putting one left and right of me a quarter of the way into the room on each side so from running some numbers it should measure better.
Obviously I won't be selling the JBL as I would never sell them (I have 3 ) just we are having a furniture change and need to move where the sub is located so basically the only way to really find out is to do it and if I cant get it how I want it then I will revert back

The JBL is also not without it's downsides though it's absolutely massive so hopefully going to 2 12s I know I potentially loose a bit of spl but I never go much louder than -15 on the amp anyways as I'm running a lot of speakers it's loud enough on movies and music

OK makes sense..... too bad you can't figure out how to put 2 of your JBL subs in the room.... that I am sure would perform well :). While not always "scientifically recommended" I have had good luck co-locating big subs and mains. Timing and set up issues are reduced, you get stereo bass, you can use linear phase crossovers, and even though they might not measure as smooth on paper I tend to prefer the sound. Good luck and have fun.

Yea thanks mate and hopefully it will be good. I have so much control over everything with the level of EQ from the denon and the hypex that's not my problem... It's just trying to find good drivers to start with

For 18" and 21" I like Eminence and LaVoce pro drivers. Not sure what they offer in 12" but you might want to check them out. The pro drivers sacrafice some extension for SPL but with EQ and room gain this can be very effective. Dayton tends to go for low extension but at 12" 20 Hz is going to be a problem for any driver. Since there is little content that low you might want to go with a higher F3 and more SPLs and less distortion. Enjoy.

You mean the Audyssey MultEQ-X app? Bridging just reduces your impedance handling....

No I mean the MULTEQ X SOFTWARE it's a £200 upgrade and it's on windows

Also this is my sub amps specs .
It's a hypex fa502

Rated power output
2 x 500 watts at 4 ohms
2 x 350 watts at 8 ohms
2 x 450 watts at 2 ohms

Rated power output bridged
1 x 1000 watts at 4 ohms
1 x 1200 watts at 8 ohms

Minimum load
2 ohms

It's not an upgrade, MultEQ-X is merely an app option for more detailed setup, like the other available app, the $20 MultEQ Editor app. See how your amp loses the lower impedance rating when bridged....that's what I was referring to; using it as a 2ch amp is probably fine, altho EQ will eat up some power in boosting the lower end trying to flatten response.

It's an upgrade when you have more control of the system and also you can use a better mic
