Subwoofer Comparison

Erin has reviewed the Monoprice M12/M13/M15 so we have a CEA-2010-A profile for them:

Based on what I'm seeing in the spreadsheet for the HSU-VTF2, the SPLs are pretty similar:

Honestly, I'm not sure that there's anything that will be purely an upgrade within your width limitation. I wouldn't expect any model that doesn't have a significantly larger cabinet and driver to get you a big increase in max SPL over what you have.

HSU ULS-15 MK2?

It's an 18" cube and is like having two VTF-2's.
Yes but 18" is two more than the requested 16" width. That extra width opens up 15" options like that ULS that ought to actually get more SPL for sure though.

True, but in post 1219 he said "depth <=18" strongly preferred. Height doesn't matter" So that only leaves width, I thought maybe he could find another two inches of width too! :) Opening up the availability of the ULS-15 is a game changer for a sub!

Looking to upgrade my old Monoprice m-12s subs, but I'm space constrained. Can anyone suggest a worthwhile upgrade that's <=16" in width? The only one I've found is the Rel 212sx, which certainly looks nice but I think we all agree is pretty low on the price: performance ratio. I know the sb3000 comes very close but not confident it's enough of an upgrade to justify the hassle (12in 500w vs 13" 800w), plus those old SVS grilles border on nauseating to look at.

15" wide:

The Monoprice M-12 V2 is a shade under 17", not sure if you can squeeze that in. Rythmik's FVX12 is 17", so is Klipsch's RP-1200SW, if the M-12 would fit perhaps those could as well. There's also the SVS PB-2000 Pro at a hair over 17", not sure if you have enough wiggle room to accommodate any of those.

Depending upon the dimensions of your room, you'll probably have to go ported to get the output you're looking for. Anything narrower than what I listed above is liking going to have a 10" driver.

I recently bought a second hand B&W DB2D and I'm very happy with it.
It performs really well next to my B&W 803S's. New, it's rather expensive tough.

Any heard the new Elac Debut 3.0 DS103-BK ?

Has anyone tested subwoofers for self-noise? I bought a Revel B112V2, Kef KC92, and a SVS SB 3000. They all exhibit some level of hiss (kind of like active speaker hiss) that is audible from the seating location in a quiet room 6-8 feet away. I think the Revel's were the quietest but were still were kind of annoying, they remind me of cheap multimedia speakers like the Bowers & Wilkins MM-1s which also had really loud hissing sound.

I wonder if I am just overly sensitive to powered speaker/sub hiss and need to find a passive sub that can be driven by a quiet A/B amp.

I have some SVS subs and they are quiet. Are you sure your upstream electronics aren't causing the noise since you have the issue with multiple different subs? Try them disconnected from the rest of the system to test.

Naw, they were noisy in Best Buy, and they sound the same at home. This has nothing to do with electronics, it's self-noise from the subs as there's nothing connected to them. I've owned multiple gens of SVS subs since the early 2000s and they've always been noisy at every house I've lived in. I was expecting more from KEF though. I was actually surprised Revel was the quietest given people have such low expectations of their subs. Most powered speakers/subs have some level of self-noise, for example we've got a thread of powered speaker self-noise measurements here at AVS and the average of Genelec speakers are around 25db, which is way higher than I can stomach. This is why I hate most powered devices, the factory installed amps are just too damn noisy.

I've never heard any self-noise from any sub I've owned, whether the fairly cheap 8" Energy, the slightly less cheap HSU STF-2, or my current Revel B10.

I'm also not sure what you mean by people having "low expectations" of Revel subs. No one who knows what the heck they're talking about would suggest they aren't quality. I can also tell you from owning one that they definitely are. The usual complaint is that they are too expensive at MSRP for what they are. Which is true. If you can ever get one at a significant discount, as I did, one shouldn't hesitate to pounce on it however.

You must have a quiet room and good hearing as 25 dB is below the noise floor of most rooms. You probably need some passive subs with high quality quiet amps to be satisfied.

Yep, it's a very quiet room. Double paned windows. Everything little noise is annoying here lol. Also I've always had hearing sensitivity to higher frequency hissing noises, CRT TVs used to drive me crazy. This is probably why I can't stand powered speakers or subs for the most part, I can hear the sssss sound just cutting through the silence. Main reason I got rid of my Genelec 8341/8331 setup and went back to passive speakers.

Wow i was convinced i was being to picky because the s21m ipal makes audible and measurable noise at ~40dB.

I'm thinking about adding a third SW to my system as I already have Dirac ART and I could benefit from it. At the moment I own 2 SVS SB-3000, which a great, but I would like to try go bigger. My room is open space and pretty big, so 15 inch should be an improvement. I usually listen at 75db, sometimes 80 db. What brand is considered the best value in Europe? I would love to get Rythmik sub, but it's not available in EU. I got my SB-3000 for a great value, ~1350 Eur, but beefier SVS subs are pretty expensive. What are my choices?
