Many test scenes they used cannot show importance of managing perspective distortion. https://photographylife.com/sensor-size-perspective-and-depth-of-field

I do agree people want balanced in size/weight, but bigger is better in both pixel size and sensor area. Larger sensors are just more flexible in creation, as you are always using longer lens for the same FoV, this you get more separation with the same f/ value.

https://astronomynow.com/2015/09/01/worlds-most-powerful-telescope-digital-camera-gets-green-light-for-construction/#:~:text=Rendering of the Large Synoptic, the night sky ever observed.

"The telescope’s camera — the size of a small car and weighing more than three tons — will capture full-sky images at such high resolution that it would take 1,500 high-definition television screens to display just one of them."

LOL. But frankly, in price and choices, currently FF is unbeatable.

Astro photography is unique as they apply many techniques such as Drizzling and Synthetic Aperture.
