I do miss my days at ITW when I could casually run this stuff in the SEM.

This is where I get stuck:
Unless one has a stable of known bad-stylus carts to look at under a microscope, and good ones to compare them to, I don't see how one can learn to identify good from bad. It seems to take practice.
As this thread is showing, taking pics doesn't seem to help much unless you have the eye skill to identify.
