Hi. I am a new member who thought he would add his experience with multichannel DSD recordings to the discussion.
I have owned an Oppo BDP-103 universal optical disc / flash drive / external portable USB hard drive player for a number of years. Although I have an extensive SACD collection, most of my listening is done using multichannel (and stereo) DSD files I've "ripped" to my pc's hard drive and then transferred to a portable 5gb usb hard drive connected to the Oppo. Not only is having music stored on an external hard drive very convenient in terms of accessing musical content, it means that I'm saving wear and tear on the Oppo's laser assembly. An added bonus of my setup is that my Yamaha AVR is capable of receiving an unconverted DSD signal output over HDMI from the Oppo which I understand is not a common feature of AVRs.
Unfortunately there is a limitation owing to my use of the Oppo: it can only handle decoding DSD 64 and 24/192 PCM signals. What landed me on this site today is my ongoing search for a higher resolution DAC which can display the contents of a cinnected flash / external hard drive either by outputting it over HDMI to an external display or by means of a built in display. If anyone has a suggestion in the regard it would be gratefully received.
P.S. The program I use to "rip" my SACDs is called SACDExtractGUI. It is available from of charge. All of my ripping is confined to discs I own.
P.P.S. Although Oppo has ceased business, their customer support remains outstanding!
