Stereophile and Audio Cables

Sometimes you’ve just got to step back! All this talk about a Stereophile article on wire(!) led to browsing through its site. After reading the bookend installments of Kalman Rubinson’s Music in the Round series, I came across Herb Reichert’s article, Gramophone Dreams #93, in which he describes listening to Rubinson’s system. Reichert mentions the hardware but the focus is on the listening and his writing eloquently details his multichannel music experience. Clearly multichannel systems require a dedicated listening room, so Reichert’s article made me re-examine my feelings about that, as well as appreciating his abilities as a hifi writer.

Next I stumbled onto Rubinson’s review of a pair of Buckeye Purifi power amps, which was enlightening as well, not only because it was nice to realize that Stereophile still offers reviews for reasonably priced state of the art components, but also the reaction to the review and the amps in the comments section, reflecting both negative and positive opinions about class d amps, which you’d expect, but that some of the opinions were expressed so forcefully that it caused me to reflect on my own strongly worded posts and how I might approach offering opinions in the future.
