Starting REW, distance between mike and computer ?

Hallo everyone and happy Easter !

I just downloaded REW again.
Again because after downloading it five years ago, I gave up
but I understand that for us here it is a tool of communication
that is very useful in order to share sounds without sounds.

I have my computer in a room next to my music room,
is that a problem to make readings. The distance between
the mike and the PC would be 12 meters (40 feet) ?

I do not want a PC in the music room, I rather use a dedicated
streamer WIIM ULTRA and my internet box is in the music room.

Thank you. Raymond

If you have access to a laptop, that would probably be the easiest solution.

Long USB cables are not recommended when using USB microphones. Read this thread on AVNirvana (from that post onwards). The problem was eventually traced to a long USB cable.

I am curious: Anyone know what the maximum practical length you can use is? Also, is it ok to use two cables joined together?
Thanks.

I understood that Streamers are much preferable for quality than the use of a PC.
But here we are speaking about measurements, not listening.
Do I need lots of power for a laptop ? If not, I could actually buy a cheap laptop
for measurings.....

You can buy a cheap laptop for measurings. Streamers don't deliver better quality than a PC, they deliver more convenience. PC's give you more flexibility. The 1's and 0's are exactly the same.

You can do anything you want with a PC if you have the right software and hardware. Examples:

- use it as a very powerful DSP platform
- play music from any source you can think of.
- capture and record from any source
- take measurements
- watch videos

ok, thank you, but for the moment I will buy
the wiim ultra and a couple of fosi V3 mono
to start, a cheap laptop to make measurements,
and go from there.
A way to get away from the PC when I listen to music.
I thought of abandoning for CD's but I think that
is a mistake today.

But out of curiosity, what can a powerful DSP platform
that a WiiM Ultra cannot do ?

Wiim Ultra can only control 2 speakers and 1 sub. There are a limited number of PEQ's. Time delay is in 1ms increments.

PC can control virtually unlimited number of speakers and subs. For example, airports, stadiums, you name it. You can remove crossovers and have your PC function as an active DSP crossover. You can design any filter you can imagine, or you can invent new ones that previously don't exist.

PC's have their downsides. They are very powerful and very flexible, and they can theoretically do everything. But getting it to do something simple, such as change input from A to B, might require reconfiguring software to reroute signals. And although it is possible to use an infrared remote with a PC, getting it to work can be quite difficult. Sometimes, if your needs are simple, you are better off with a Wiim. Wiim's are robust, inexpensive, and reliable. PC's are none of those things.
