Hello every one,

Can some one help me out?

I want to start a hifi system and i was thinking of the following:

1 Wiim mini +

2 SMSL D6S or Topping E70 (because of the 12V trigger)

3 Fosi ZA3

Is this a good hifi system to start with? or can i better buy something like a Yamaha r-n 800?

A Yeah a have some Polk R100 bookshelfs and an svs sb 1000 sub.

Thanks... Greetz Ed

I’d consider replacing options 1 and 2 with a WiiM Ultra.

Now it’s not out yet, and we need to wait for reviews, but it’ll cost $320, it’ll do everything the Mini + SMSL/Topping will do, and more.

It has an improved DAC section over the previous WiiM Pro Plus, so should be transparent. If it reviews as expected, it’ll be fantastic.

Another alternative is to replace 1, 2 and 3 with a WiiM Amp, or wait for the WiiM Amp Pro. In his review here, Amir measured the vanilla Amp as good as or better than the ZA3, and the Amp Pro should be better still, and at $369 is a great price.

Importantly, both routes should suit your set up, as both the Ultra and Amp (and Amp Pro) have a subwoofer out, with bass management, something you won’t get with the Topping/SMSL/Fosi/WiiM Mini. You also get HDMI in.

You also get room correction and (soon to come ) stereo (L&R) 10-band PEQ, whilst it’s just a straight mono 10-band with the Mini.

Both the Ultra and Amp Pro are due to land in July, or possibly August.

Hope that helps. Best wishes.

All the hi-fi hardware won't sound hi-fi in an untreated room. Ask me how I know it... It's great if you've already taken care of it, but if you haven't, then the budget will be blown by another couple of grand for the DIY acoustic treatment or even more so for some non-DIY commercial stuff.

Almost all modern electronics subjectively sound the same. So what you've picked up should be fine as long as the amp can pump your speakers. What makes the difference in the room are
1. The room itself - acoustics placement, acoustic treatment, main listening position location, mean spatial variance of the SPL across seats if you are not the only audience in the room.
2. The speakers+subs+crossover/PEQ DSP (or how else would you merge together the speakers and the sub(-s) then?).
3. Everything else by a waaaaaaaay smaller margin, so I wouldn't stress about the DAC, the amp (as long as it has enough power to drive the speakers), the streamer, the cables etc.

BTW it will be very difficult to counteract all room modes with just a single subwoofer. Ideally, two or more subs are better for that purpose provided you are familiar with how to use acoustic measurement mic and REW software.

Yes,
Welcome to ASR,

Most listening spaces benefit from room treatment. Consider whether you need to budget for room treatment.

The WiiM Mini does not support Room Correction. The WiiM Pro, Pro Plus, Amp, and Ultra support room correction.

Currently room correction is only available on the WiiM Home app for iOS. It is not available on the WiiM Home app for Anrdroid as WiiM is apparently looking for an external microphone to use when measuring a listening space from an Android device.

The WiiM Ulltra offers a lot of functionality with its inputs and outputs. If your source is only wireless streaming, a WiiM Pro or Pro Plus can do the job.

You could purchase a Yamaha r-n 800. AFAIK, the Yamaha lacks the option to apply Parametric EQ offered by WiiM.

Thanks for the replys

I was eyeing the wiim pro, pro plus, ultra and amp (pro) But what i have see is that the power is less than the ZA3 with xlr cables. My Polk r100 speakers are not very easy to drive i believe
  • nominal impedance: 8/6/4/3,6 ohms
  • sensitivity: 86 dB
  • recommended amplifier power: 30-150 watts
  • high-current amplification from a quality power amp or integrated amp is recommended for best performance
I first bought a powernode n330 on the marketplace in the Netherlands but after 3 weeks the N330 stopt playing. After research on the internet it was due to cheap captors in the powersupply. So the high current amp that is recommended is no joke.

The wiim products have alot of features i know but i thought the power of the ZA3 would be good to drive the Polk speakers and with xlr the power is even a bit more. So that is why was looking for a DAC with xlr outputs. Dont know if the ZA3 is a high current amp tho. Was planning to buy the 48volt supply. What was also nice is that im able to buy a second ZA3 in the future for the mono option. And u was planing to sell the Wiim mini in the future en eventually buy a Wiim ultra for it.

I was planning to hook the Wiim mini/DAC/ZA3 up to the SVS sb-1000 for its HPF and LPF if that makes sense.

For what acoustic treatment in my room i dont think i have much options. Its a livingroom that is not very big. Its a house in a row. It will all be placed near the TV.
Is roomcorrection such a big deal in my setup?

How about going for MiniDSP Flex instead of DAC for unfortunately quite more money in Netherlands and UMIK-1 of course. If you can try to find second hand AS/RS 700 Yamaha, as little used and is as good shape you can find for 250/150 €. Afterwards consider getting a second sub and no not for counter fire but to cross them to each chenel higher (120~130 Hz) and close to mains in order to have better equal loudness compensation transfer.

I really not that into a AV receiver because of the size an all the connectivities that i wound use.

Its going to be the Wiim amp or the Wiim pro plus + Fosi ZA3

The Wiim amp is a all in one and done system and the Pro plus and ZA3 more of a thing that i can build for in the future.

Also the ZA3 has PFFB if thats a thing and a little more power i think. The measurements of the review on ASR was 140W 4ohm on XLR, dont know what it is on RCA.

My daily driver DAC is the Topping E70 Velvet via XLR. Not crazy about the remote/interface, but it sounds amazing.

The Wiim amp with bass management and streaming/eq options seems like a great way to go for you.
