It kinda hurts when I hear everyone say that about the Captian America thing...because in the comics - Falcon does eventually become Capitan America, Steve Rogers looses the supersoldier powers and becomes a human at peak physical strength. There are so many Cap A's it's ridiculous (over 20)!!! If you're a comics geek like me - you get used to it. Marvel had all of you fooled that Stark was dead too...huh. Secret Wars will bring back a new "sacred time-line" that includes all of the heros you thought were......well, I live this right here and see how it ages.
Interestingly enough it's sort of the reverse of Star Wars, where the latter started out with movies and then extended the universe with print content superheroes really went the opposite direction. I think we're generally inclined to see the movies as the "real deal" unless we are like you and read a lot of the other stuff.
To me a movie has to be able to stand on its own to be a good movie. Either that or there needs to be an asterisk that says "Oh, and read X, Y and Z to understand what's going on".
In general though I totally agree with comics being really flexible, super-flexible, when it comes to changing up timelines and characters. I have no problem with that really.
