Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

This is ASR. Where are the measurements and/or blind testing?

No need to douche other members who don't have the same point-of-view or your nostalgia but are ;) willing to state them!
I may have debated certain points but I don't believe I ever "douche" anyone.

I loved TNG but I loathed the new Picard series.
Wow, really? I thought Patrick Steward's acting and portrayal of JLP in the 3 Picards was a highlight of his career in the series. I don't believe there's ever been a more hate-able evil trek villain than Amanda Plummer as the villainous Vadic, man I wanted to just jump thru the screen and smash her face. LOL. Then at 56 Jeri Ryan was looking as yummy as ever, I was praying for the spinoff with her as the next Captain to get a green light.

Have to say... "Woke" is one of those words that has been used so broadly, and in so many contradictory ways, that it's lost any stable meaning in everyday conversation.

It began as African American vernacular meaning "aware of injustice", especially racial injustice and was used positively within that community for decades.

Different groups use it to mean completely different things now.

It has become a label applied to almost anything related to social issues... it's only real use now is as an insult, not a descriptor, as it's become undefined.

I also think they are going too light on even attempting to be science-y... at least in TNG they would throw around physics terms enough to make you try to figure out if they made sense.
At least back in the day, they made sure that it sort of made sense. Since discovery, science is more like magic and the terms at times are so cringe that there is no need to figure things out. And this is basically not just the sci-fi, this translates to all aspects of these Kurtzman shows. They are dumb, shallow, stupid, overly emotional and highly unrealistic. If this is a representation of the “modern audience”, then oh dear…

This is their representation of a modern audience. imo people aren't more stupid nowadays than they were in the 90's, producers just stopped betting on their intelligence, and also specifically for Starfleet academy it seems it's tailored for teenagers. Overall it's a bit of a lazy, rehashed show, made by people who aren't that great at what they do, that's why I wouldn't overstretch an explanation for why most of us don't like it. I'll still keep the hope something better is to come.

Original Star Trek depicted crew who were stoic, controlled their emotions, and made logical and rational decisions. They play-off between McCoy and Spock depicted two aspects of humanity - the cold, logical, and rationale side, and the "human" side - humour, empathy, compassion. Quite often those two collided, and Kirk had to make the decision. What was important was that both sides of the argument were presented. The viewer had to ask themselves "what would I do?", but in the end, it was up to Kirk.

TNG followed this formula, but they didn't copy the Spock-McCoy dynamic. You can think of Data as TNG's Spock, but Data was a completely different character. He was on a quest to discover his humanity, and through him, we learn about ourselves. Once again, both sides of the argument are presented - Data's side, and Picard / Riker and sometimes Troi and Laforge representing humanity.

You never got the feeling that a viewpoint was being shoved down your throat. A good example from Voyager was when Tuvix was created after a transporter malfunction fused Tuvok and Neelix. Janeway ordered the staff to reverse the malfunction, but in doing so, Tuvix would have to be destroyed. Tuvix argued passionately that he did not want to die, pointed out that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, yet he must pay the ultimate price. The staff were reluctant to carry out her orders, so she coldly went to the transporter and did it herself. Till now, I am not sure I agree with her - that was a moral dilemma for sure. How do you think modern day Trek would handle it? Would the writers even have enough imagination to think of an episode like that?

I wouldn't rely on this bunch of people with emotional diarrhoea to crew a McDonalds, let alone a Federation Starship.

I started watching TNG and the original series when I was a pre-teen, and watched most of the rest as a teen and early adult. This is the exact age bracket Academy was made for. I never needed the dumbing down or hyper-emotional crap, and I'm very sure it still doesn't. Frankly, it is rather insulting.

I couldn’t disagree more with you. Picard was a shade of his former self in the new series.

I went to college with Amanda Plummer at Middlebury. Didn't know her well, but frequently saw her writing/journaling in our on-campus coffee place. Let me tell you, she was even intimidating-looking at age 21!

She used to be Eleven-of-Nine, but now:

She is back to being just Seven-of-Nine... ugly knees!

Back in the day the writers would simply ignore the technobabble and focus on the interesting bits instead:

I think it is probable that this made for a better show.

Interesting article. It’s not super surprising I guess. It was never about the sci-fi, really. It was about the stories and interactions of the characters. At least back in the day, they used consultants. It had some consistency and made halfway sense. Now, they just write any nonsense in total disregard of believability and canon.

Maybe they got that way from
Naw, I won't say it. ROTF

This stuff supposed to be fun and entertaining, go to a Shakespearean play or some boring college credit class for the rest. LOL

I remember my favorite Sy Fy movie from 1974 Flesh Gordon !
Our hero Flesh Gordon; his love interest Dale Ardor, the evil Emperor Wang the Perverted, scientist Dr. Flexi Jerkoff; seductive Amora, queen of Magic, along with gay Prince Precious combine to build a cast of incredible talent using some of the best script writing Hollyweird has ever had to offer. :p

I've seen all of the episodes so far, and was disappointed with the first few. They were a bit weak, but then after 3 or 4 episodes in, they had some stories about individual characters and I thought those were good. Overall is a bit more "young adulty" than I like, but hopefully it will get better.

I was hoping I'd like Sissy Spacek's character a little more, but she's a little too loosey goosey for me.

I feel like we also got the old bait-and-switch. In the early promos talking about Paul Giamatti being in it, I felt like they were implying he'd have a bigger role, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Same with Tilly. I thought she was supposed to be a regular.

I'll watch it, but I hope it gets better.

Sissy in Academy ???

His part expanded greatly in Episode 6 and I'm expecting his to have a big bang for the season closer this week.

It always was fun and entertaining, otherwise I would never have watched the shows in the first place.

I haven't actually watched this yet, busy with other shows... it's queued in fav's.

So will reserve opining until then... have a feeling I may well like it simply because so many don't. :P

Watched season finale tonight, again as in episode 6 Paul Giamatti was the leading character. He plays one hell of a bad guy, good actor.
I'll look forward to season 2 which is already in the can, along with Strange New Worlds seasons 4 and 5. I just hope we don't have any more musical episodes. LOL
Otherwise things are in a bit of a spin with Paramounts money issues and it's joining with Skydance.

"Last time I heard that, I fell off of my horse!"
No, not me but I heard maybe that's the reason why William Shattner did...
