My father introduced me to Jack Daniels 'Black Label' Old No. 7 and arranged for me to become a 'Tennessee Squire'.

I was chagrined when the owner Brown-Forman reduced the proof of Old No. 7 from 90 to 86 and now 80.

I now consume 90 proof Tennessee Whiskey from George Dickel (owned by Diaego).

In the US, it is hard to get plain old Eagle Rare for MSRP. At its regular price (~$50), I think it is well worth it. But at the same time, I also could be happy drinking Buffalo Trace. I like the sweet style in these bottles, but am less of a fan of the Weller Wheaters.

This particular Eagle Rare pick is, as I tell friends I have poured it for, unusually Scotch-like. You won't mistake it for Scotch but other than the blackberry and oak notes I tend to get with bourbon, the oak is surprisingly subdued and gains a fruity (lychee especially) quality. I mean all this in the best way possible. Incredibly sippable

will be enjoying some Old Ezra 7 Year Rye Full Proof this evening...outstanding blend of 2 MGP rye recipes- smooth, not overly sweet, spicy, a bit hard for me to describe but it is delicious...one of my favorite finds in 2026...and I can get it for around $45 USD

A few years ago I had an Absinthe cocktail at a NYC bar that touted its authentic Absinthe collection. That was a one and done. Felt like I had six drinks (in my middle age, I'm a two drink guy, max).

I know this one has been out on the US market for years- and is highly regarded- the Knob Creek 12. Not sure why I waited so long to give it a shot- as I have enjoyed the 9 year for a long time. I look forward to my first sampling this weekend. I was able to get a bottle for $42.

Any fans out there?

Apparently there is a limited edition KC12 Cask Strength available now- but above my self-imposed bottle price limit.

Used to be Lagavulin, Talisker and Laphroaig preferring the latter in "my single malt period", but these days I prefer Aquavit and Calvados from family owned distilleries. I also prefer traditional variations, and stay away from the fashion approach. When a distillery is sold to the likes of LVMH and what not, I tend to move on. Not much of a drinker, but I believe in the small family owned business model and the traditional.

As for beer, the same approach goes, classic beers from one of the few remaining independent breweries, and for wines I mainly stick to Sicilan/Italian (pastas and italian soups++) occasionally weering off to Portuguese and South African. Nothing fancy at all, probably 80-90% of my consumption is Italian/Sicilian reds with food.

I’m a fan. Have you tried the Blenders Edition? 10 year , around $40. Might be my favorite mid shelf offering from KC.

I had opportunities to pick up the Blenders Edition- and waited too long! I've heard lots of high praise. I doubt I'll be able to find one in this round- but hopefully it is a recurring annual offering. I appreciate your insights- thanks!
