My father introduced me to Jack Daniels 'Black Label' Old No. 7 and arranged for me to become a 'Tennessee Squire'.

I was chagrined when the owner Brown-Forman reduced the proof of Old No. 7 from 90 to 86 and now 80.

I now consume 90 proof Tennessee Whiskey from George Dickel (owned by Diaego).

In the US, it is hard to get plain old Eagle Rare for MSRP. At its regular price (~$50), I think it is well worth it. But at the same time, I also could be happy drinking Buffalo Trace. I like the sweet style in these bottles, but am less of a fan of the Weller Wheaters.

This particular Eagle Rare pick is, as I tell friends I have poured it for, unusually Scotch-like. You won't mistake it for Scotch but other than the blackberry and oak notes I tend to get with bourbon, the oak is surprisingly subdued and gains a fruity (lychee especially) quality. I mean all this in the best way possible. Incredibly sippable

will be enjoying some Old Ezra 7 Year Rye Full Proof this evening...outstanding blend of 2 MGP rye recipes- smooth, not overly sweet, spicy, a bit hard for me to describe but it is delicious...one of my favorite finds in 2026...and I can get it for around $45 USD
