Won this at auction. Found Glen Scotia promising the one time I had it, and I wasn't going to pay ridiculous secondary prices for Springbank. Plus, I have always wanted to try an older Campbeltown. Should have done my due dilligence - a notoriously sulfured cask that's way below the standards Cadenhead's is known for. If one manages to tune out the all-pervading sulfur, there's actually a lot of promise. Flavours of fresh brioche, buttercream, speculoos, tie guan yin tea, a cloudy pear cider tang. What a shame. I have heard of some people dipping copper into sulfured, but otherwise good Scotch to extract some of the sulfur and salvage the whisky. Feels like this Campbeltown is worth that effort.
A lot more tolerable on the rocks but still makes me pucker up and wince a fair bit.

One of the rare times a hotel souvenir isn't tacky, overpriced or unattractive: a single cask rum from Fiji bottled for the 50th anniversary of the Shangri-La hotel chain. 6.5 years (4ish continental, the rest tropical). Ex-cognac cask. They were selling it to us at essentially cost at a hotel bar.
S/O tastes maple syrup, I taste aloe vera.
A Laphroaig 12yo from a single refill sherry cask, bottled exclusively for a Taiwan whisky store renowned in Asia for its selection. Some spendy Scotch a friend kindly shared. A more delicate, subtle take on the classic Laphroaig profile - honeydew, watermelon rind, cucumber, tobacco, flint, rosemary, lavender. Very very dry
Tried some Lagavulin 8-year-old and Laphroaig Select last weekend while playing radio on a mountaintop—both the least expensive from those distilleries—and both were excellent.
I was also somewhat impressed by Gentleman Jack.

Spent last weekend offering some friends tastings of my favorite bottles and OMG they really put a dent in my precious elixirs - Macallan 18 (sherry oak), Yamazaki 18, Hibiki 17, and Old Pulteney 21.
I’d forgotten how wonderful the Macallan is (haven’t taken a dram in over 3 years?) as I have many many sherried alternatives in my cupboard (old bottling of Glendronach 15, Glendronach 18, and Glengoyne 21 and 25 as well as Aberlour 18 which I considered the poor man’s Macallan 18). They don’t match the mouth feel or the intensity of the Macallan. I was surprised to see that it’s near impossible to find a bottle even at today’s inflated prices. Sad to see my Yamazaki bottle level drop so low since it’s so rare.. Happy to know it was enjoyed.

Never heard of this, but me like good bourbon. I'm stuck here sipping on a glass of cheap Woodbridge Pinot Noir.
Crazy that some of the bottles in my stash are selling for crazy multiples for which I bought them years ago. I hope the bubble bursts because I think good drinks should be accessible to all.
When I really like something, I buy several bottles knowing it may not be available down the road. Now I have a sizeable stash of unopened mostly Japanese whiskies and there’s no real legal outlet to sell or trade them. I’ll down the 17-18 year olds and probably gift all the 12 years over time.
Plan to empty the last of the Glenmorangie 18 tonight.
