Speakers with some scale

These seem to have potential::)

Polk Reserve R700

Used in UK, Doncaster for GBP 950.00. :

Doncaster. Long way from where you live @Jim586music ?

In any case, used speakers then buy well-known and on the market fairly easy-to-sell brands / models. Think about a reasonable price. It should go more or less plus minus 0 in the wallet if you then, for some reason, want to sell them.

No distance in England is truly great ;) .
It's not even 1000 km long and only 500 km wide.

Have you tried navigating this overcrowded and increasingly skint island (long before the current population moans here which I'll leave aside) with increasingly dangerous pot-holed and overloaded roads worse than ever, being driven on selfishly by 'entitled' overweight SUV tanks/vans-with-windows. It's really not the same as driving on German autobahns or perhaps cruising in the US for hundreds of miles/km with rarely another vehicle to be seen once away from the densely populated parts. Parking is also an issue now as our parking spaces were designed for 1970s cars, not the small tanks our locals drive around these parts...

Seriously though, a journey of a hundred miles or more to look at, listen to and maybe purchase a pair of loudspeakers, is a big thing here ;)

I’ve seen a pair of Wharfdale diamond 12.4s for a very reasonable price.

Any thoughts?

Relatively. For an American it's nothing. For a Luxembourger it probably is.:)

In any case. If a seller, as in that Polk Reserve R700 ad writes: Few scratches visible on pictures.
Then it could mean anything. By the way, I don't see any scratches when I check with my mobile phone.
Another seller could say the same and the speakers would look as if...

...had them. :D

I've heard them several times, but they're not at all comparable to the Aurora 700 or the suggested Polk R700. They're several classes below and not really big (not referring to their dimensions).

It is probably because the new Wharfedale Diamond 12.4i model has been launched. Thus discounted sale of 12.4.

I like the Wharfedale Diamond 220 bookshelf speakers. BUT they do not have a decent output in the bass range. For me it matters less because I add a subwoofer. What I mean is whether the Wharfedale Diamond 12.4 /12.4i have decent bass ability or not? If not, then you should not think about them. Then you may as well add subwoofers (which you do not want to do) to yours Q acoustics concept 20s.

My small XTZ Tune 4 active speakers with 4 inch woofer have much better bass output than Wharfedale Diamond 220.:)

I listened to the Wharfedale Diamond 12.4, among other things, in comparison to the Elac DBR62, which I would definitely prefer.
The Wharfedale Diamond 12.4 are typical budget 2.5-way speakers with two 150mm mid/bass drivers. The bass might have gone a little deeper than the DBR62, but it definitely wasn't as clean and clearly defined.

If you're looking for something similar (2.5-way with two 150mm drivers), then I can highly recommend the Elac Carina FS 247.4. They can be found in Germany for around €1000 per pair, and even cheaper used.

Thanks. That’s really helpful.

I’ve read that Heco has been taken over.
Is that correct? Would repairs be an issue?
I’ve seen a pair for £630 used. These are the originals not the AT version.
It’s not the finish I’d choose but could live with them.

Heco was acquired in 2008 and is now part of the Gentex Corporation, just like Magnat, Klipsch, and Onkyo.
There have been no problems with spare parts in recent years, and no failures or problems are known with the Aurora series either.

I think for £1k, used might be good. I'm in the UK and did an ebay search for floorstanders £800-£1,100 and there are 92 results. Monitor Audio Silver 200 7G / B&W 603 S2 / FOCAL JM LAB COBALT 826S / Dynaudio Xeo 30 and loads more. Some with reasonable delivery costs, free in some cases. Plenty to work through.

If you can push to £1,500 you can still grab Revel F206 in white with free delivery @ Nintronics. I think that is worth the extra.

Open box Lintons with stands £999

Lots of other well priced options there too, great company, free delivery (Nintronics online = Hifihive on ebay). eg ;Monitor Audio Silver 200 7G (new £998 delivered), look to measure OK too.

Other decent places would be Premium Sounds and Kronos often have some left field used options.

If you @Jim586music want to test some other type of speakers, maybe these:
Screenshot_2026-04-16_190136.jpg

Note, you with experience of electrostats will have to give your opinion on them if Jim586music is interested in them.
For example, if they fit in Jim586music's listening room (aren't electrostats a bit tricky to place in a listening room?).
If they are prone to breaking down, need to be repaired. After all, it is still around 30 years old electrostats and eletrostats that need to be repaired, servicing can mean a lot of work.

That doesn't seem like a very good price, but then I'm not familiar with the island market. Got mine for 600€ new (500 GBP?), certainly aided by both shop and manufacturer being just 30km from here.

But! For 600 silver pieces used or, let's say 1000 new, they're still really good value. Either way, if that offer is nearby, you could use it as a test listening opportunity. Different room certainly, but you'll still get a good first hand impression. You'll have to hear them to see how good they really are.
