Speakers w/Full-range Drivers

I have never been clear if transmission line designs are more gimmick vs reality. What's the ASR finding on that?
They seem a very good way to go but mostly in the DIY realm since few offer it otherwise. The extra cabinet construction costs are probably a reason you don't see a lot of options in this regard.

In a case of synchronicity, I have recently re-activated a much-beloved pair of mass loaded folded, tapered quarter-wave tubes (ML TQWT) enclosures using slightly tweaked Radio Shack 50-1354 EDIT 40-1354 (sorry about that!) twincone drivers. They are quite nice.

The notion of "undersized to purpose" drives is an amusing one -- look at the loudspeakers @amirm has tested over the past few years. ;)
Are those the same drivers they used to call holey basket corals.? I used to by tube driven sony RTR's to harvest those & all the mullards, BB's, etc..

No they're decidedly low(er) rent drivers than the holey basket corals. ;) The R/S drivers' provenance isn't known (at least by me), but they're good sounding little drivers.

The Corals are quite different and, indeed, held in considerable regard in some circles. I don't have much experience with them myself, though.

Would be interesting to compare that old driver to a modern similar equivalent, like Mark Audio p mica full ranges

Or even a cheaper alternative of Bose driver

The Coral Holey Baskets with alnico motors are ideal in these back loaded horn enclosures ( Frugal Horns ). The B&G planar tweeters add just a bit of sparkle on top. I don't listen to them in this room but we were working on the floors so I moved one there for this picture.

I had private audition of Etheraudio Normal 28 Full Range Loudspeaker 10yrs ago.
Played house, techno and disco on them 2+ hours . The sound was excellent to my untrained ears, but the very narrow sweet spot , wardrobe's size and look and of course the price was no-no for me.

The are a reality and well designed ones have some of the best low end responses I've heard., the science backs this up their principals. There are advantages that a bass reflex can't accomplish but by no means does that make them bad.

In the modern sphere, PMC is the brand I associate with transmission line designs, but have no experience with them. They don't measure well as i recall, but that's just one brand and tells us nothing. Subjectively, some of their recent home and $ friendlier stuff seems well liked.

I always thought the Serene Audio Talisman was an interesting design although $500 for a little pair of one-way desktop speakers is way too rich for my blood as cool looking as they are, I've read good reviews about the sound too

What's the definition of full range transcribed into FR, Distortion, and so on ...?

Maybe it's just driver designed to play without a filter.
Of course there are some woofers designed like this too.
Maybe 100Hz to 10kHz . Even then, there are 1 inch "full range" drivers.

There are not fullranges that realy achieve full range:)
Just the way the term is used, it only uses a single driver to attempt the full range is one way to think about it I suppose....like thinking all floor standers are full range even with multiple drivers :)

I use all wide band speakers in this 5.1 system. The mains are MLTL Lowther's which make so much bass I rarely use the sub.

Thus do I try to use the term extended-range driver for a single-driver "solution" ;) -- and/or I will usually put "full-range" in quotation marks.
