I'm looking to buy some oak speaker stands - a few of the makers as standard offer the centre column hollowed out so you can add material to 'tune' your speaker (or you can have it solid oak) - increase / reduce bass etc. My hunch is that it's complete bs and the best you can hope for is that it doesn't resonate and 'decouples'. I figured solid wood rather than hollow wood would be better. What do you think?

Yup complete bullshit, making the base of the stand heavier and securing the speaker securely to the stand is a good idea.

Filling them up with something that doesn't resonate and is heavier than oak might make it even more dead. But if you aren't planning on that just go for solid wood.

Either would work.
Just make sure they have a broad, solid base down keeping them for tilting easily and then secure the speaker on it,don't just let it stand free there.

Can have a smallish through hole for cable routing

I like the idea of these stands. The stand is basically four wooden posts and the frontal area between them is filled with acoustic dampening material (the center is just air). Makes for a nice two-in-one for some sound deadening + stand.

This is a no-go in earthquake country, Earth resonance would topple such a tall and narrow footprint stand.

I recently made some rather sturdy pieces of hardwood furniture, and I have been checking out their resonances. For example, this bar stool and foot stool (Japanese elm). Striking either them yields audible resonance in the neighborhood of 1 kHz, in the female side of the vocal spectrum. It is a pleasant sound, like ringing a wooden bell, but I think it could be a problem for resonances if I were to use similar structures for speaker stands.
