Speaker placement advice sought

Long-time lurker; first-time posting

Attached is a diagram of my proposed listening room. The little dark brown squares represent my two-way, stand-mounted, bookshelf speakers (drawn to scale). At the top of the image are alcoves at either long end of the room (about 2½' deep x 4' wide)

My questions for the collective:
• What is the best way to arrange speakers in this room? Long wall or short wall
• are the alcoves a problem? If so, how do I treat?
• what is the ideal seating position, given your answers to the above.

Just set it up initially like our diagram. Then fiddle with it until you get the best sound you like. Enjoy the hobby......
