Sony CDP-557ESD/707ESD Review (CD Player)

Not quite.

The CDP-XA55ES is a Japan only model, with aluminum side-panels and a thick iron top plate. The digital filter (CXD8762) is indeed identical to the one in the first Sony SA-CD players and the DAC chip (CXD8594) is the same as in the SCD-1, SCD-777ES and CDP-MS1.

Outside of Japan, Sony sold a CDP-XA555ES, with a more regular folded iron cover. The digital filter (CXD8762) and the DAC chip (CXD9521) is the same as in the SCD-555ES, but the analogue post-DAC filter in the latter is very different.

It should be noted that the CDP-XA55ES and XA555ES also got a motorized (remote-controllable) volume potentiometer for the headphone and variable line output.
All of them are on my wanted list :)

I participated to an auction on the SCD-777ES, and I thought I’d win, but I lost. This one keeps a very high value.

I did not know the CDP-MS1, I like the look!

I'm curious to know the quantified differences between these models, taking into account the fact that several parameters vary: digital filtering, analogue filtering and the output stage...

Living room approved by my wife, this is beyond measurements, right?:p

Below article is a recommended read, would be interesting to see full measurements of CDP-R10 and DAS-R10.

The mechanical part and the D/A is really something else.
Pal of mine has both units, needless to say they are excellent. Although, being a vinyl nut, he was not happy that I thought they outperformed his turntable.

Hello, I'm new here. I've read your information about the 557 with great interest. I'm a big fan of the 557. As mentioned, it's now 37 years old. Unfortunately, I've noticed a humming noise from the power transformers for some time now. Is there anything I can do about it?

Check if it is still well screwed to the chassis, I had one case like that. But if you can hear the humming through your speakers, some aging caps could be the cause, and that would need more investigations. Mine has more humming noise in one channel, as I can measure it, but not to the point I can hear it. I think some caps would require a refresh after all the years of service.

No, there is no humming sound coming from the speakers.
I thought it might be due to the voltage not yet being switched to 240V.
Merry Christmas!
