Sony BDP-S1700/K Review (Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Transport)

I was Googling this DVD player and came across this review. I picked it up today at my local Goodwill for 3.99. It didn't have the power plug but I took the chance as I have a another Sony Blu-ray/SACD player. It works great!

I have used a basic Panasonic Bluray player for the last seventeen years, with a Panasonic plasma screen of the same age, but also for audio. I use the digital coax output into my RME ADI-2 and the sound quality has been impeccable (I never expected otherwise). Video technology, however, has clearly moved on. I suppose I should expect similar audio quality from a recent UHD player, but with better video quality, both for playing standard Bluray and UHD. I am a bit out of touch on the video side, and we still love our Panasonic plasma, but after seventeen years we should expect the screen to die sooner rather than later.

Those Sonys are great as a transport, however problem is the lack of controls on a front panel, so you're forced to use a remote and external monitor.

I currently have x800, but I wonder if there is any better alternative with display and buttons on a front panel. Would love to keep current 4k, DSD over HDMI capability.

What about the Sony UBP models?

I have Sony UBP-X700/K and using the coaxial digital output, my Marantz AVR shows:

For CD and SACD: 44.1kHz
For all Blu-Ray audio discs whether (48/96/192kHz): 48kHz

I would assume that it too plays CD audio bit perfectly. Can anybody confirm this is a fact?

My guess is that Audyssey works at 48kHz (maybe 96?) and everything is resampled to this frequency. Bit perfect was a motto for Sound Blaster in previous century, was it?

i did check the whole thread, might have missed it tho...
is this player (or any other for that matter) able to reproduce flac files from burned multi-layer BR's, preferably gap-less?
not interested in playback through DLNA, strictly discs....

I got this little wonder boy and wanted to test USB files.

When I try to play USB files, I get error saying warining of corrupt files or file format is wrong.
I tried both WAV and FLAC and with the USB stick formatted with FAT32 and ExFAT.

So, cleaning out the shed and stumbled across some more vinyl and my old CD collection. Including some nice box sets.

Was looking on line for a CD transport and then stumbled upon this thread - I saw a Sony blu ray player in the shed! Not sure when I last used it - set it up, works, updated firmware, remote works.

Hi Thom, I think it was a 32 or 64Gb, and certainly FAT32. I tried only WAV files though.
Maybe have a look at the user guide if there are restrictions.
