I use a portable monitor as a display for my Sony BDP-S6700, but I like this option better!Upon reflection: I'd be tempted to go for maximum irony if I switch to one of these as a transport. I'd invest into a converter (there must be one, right‽) and use something like this as a display.

EDIT: I actually have a GE Portacolor in the basement. It is semi-functional but would need a full going-through to actually reproduce video.

Sony BDP-S1700/K Review (Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Transport)

Most likely NEC EMMA3P MC-10068F1 SoC is used in this model.
It's hard to say how good it is, but judging by reviews of devices from different eras, problems with digital output are rare.
I measured the S300 model based on the Sigma SoC, and the results were very good. I doubt Sony made any changes to it.

There is no difference between the players regarding their digital outputs—or at least only a minimal one, well beyond the audible range.
You can find information via Google about which of these players allow ripping via a hack; there is also an overview listing all the players.

Just did comparison of built in RCA then with a DAC via Toslink. The built in sounded weak. Not that i would use it ever. Glad I kept this one.

My wife bought one of these over a decade ago. We use it for Blu-ray’s and DVD’s.
A few weeks ago she asked if we had anything to play her CD’s if she grabbed them out of storage. I didn’t think of the Blu-ray player at all. Just told her to go grab them.

Liked it so much I bought a second one to use instead of the Panasonic player on my main system. A great deal for the price.

Lucky you. I play CDs on both of mine and I don’t notice any noise from the player. Of course I play my music loud. Enjoy your new music!

The BDP-S5500 is very similar to the BDP-S1700/K reviewed here. I performed a basic test on the BDP-S5500 using DeltaWave and can confirm it too plays CD audio bit perfectly. It also plays CDs without gaps.
