Some info about Topping's incoming DX1 II

Years ago I purchased this Belkin SoundForm Connect at Argos UK for GBP25. Today I took it out again and connected it to the DX1 II with an optical cable. It's my cheap solution for an Airplay music streamer.

I quite like that stand/box - did you making it yourself or buy it? I've been thinking of making something similar to house my desktop system (wiim amp ultra + topping dx5ii).

I purchased it from Taobao China for approximately USD 4.50. It’s a custom-made order with outer dimensions of 18 cm × 18 cm × 8 cm. I originally ordered it for my Topping Mini 300, and I plan to order another one soon to complete my DeskFi system.

Topping’s official stance is still that you shouldn’t hot‑plug, but if you mute the system or pause the music before unplugging — so there’s no signal going through the jack when you pull the plug — it’s a lot safer.

I don’t know a ton about circuit design, but imo: if you’re unlucky enough, almost any device can have that kind of short risk. You might accidentally bridge the positive and negative terminals inside the jack with a 4.4mm plug — unless the manufacturer specifically built in anti‑short protection for that scenario.

Have used it for some days, and we users in the chatting group found some wired bugs with the released version firmware:

Just don't use "Auto Display Off" mode. We found that with this setting, you might experience audio stuttering, dropouts, or the pitch going up/down — for example, vocals sounding thicker or thinner. From my own attempts to reproduce the bug, it seems to be affected by the output sample rate set in Windows audio settings. I'm using USB connectiuon from a Windows 11 PC, with the output set to 24bit / 96kHz.

I don't know exactly what causes it, but to avoid the bug, just don't use the "Auto Display Off" mode in the screen brightness settings. We've already reported this to Topping, and they said they'll release a firmware update to fix it as soon as possible.

Doesn't power up directly on USB from my phones, either on UAC 1 or 2 mode.

My S23U would show "high-powered USB device" connected.

Quite disappointed to say the least.

Depends, most phones do not have the enough power output for that.
But you may try some spliter cables, or usb isolator like HS02 that can separate power from digital signal, and just use an extra powerbank for the power.

Weird how the larger D50 III actually works for phones in the same use case.

D50iii is just a DAC without AMP part, so, acceptable.

Maybe a question outside most people's typical use case, but does the 3.5mm mic input work even with 4.4mm headphones? It works on my Fiio KA15 so that I can use a lav mic with my 4.4mm headphones, but I'm not sure if it would work with the DX5 II.

Honestly might pick it up either way – I really want a second PEQ DAC/amp for my TV gaming setup, to go along with my DX5 II.

Noob here. Are there any concerns about hot-plugging the USB power? There doesn't seem to be a power off function on the device, only a standby mode. I currently have an AudioEngine D1 DAC and I hot-plug it all the time.

Further questions. I have the Linux/Windows channel balance adjusted. With the DX1 II, is the channel balance still adjustable? I could be wrong but I recall a report of another DAC where the channel balance can't be adjusted in Windows. Even better, am I right in assuming the PEQ preamp gain can be used to adjust channel balance? Is conversion of the Linux/Windows balance percentage to Topping Tune as simple as turning the volume down to figure out the minimum, then calculating an equivalent dB percentage of the volume range?

When switching between line out and headphone out, is the previous volume remembered separately for each? I'm assuming probably not since it supports an option to output simultaneously to both.

1. Yes. There's pure line out, pure HP out, and simultaneous line out + HP out mode (BTW why is this mode even here? Entirely pointless), each with their own digital volume memory.
2. Prolly 1 meter. But I'm super OCD in keeping unused stuff in stock condition so I never bothered to actually unpack it though.

Received mine today, checked that all works and updated to latest firmware without any problems.

Web UI is a nice addition, no need for any additional software anymore. Scenes work fine and its easy to switch to PO+EQ1 and LO+EQ2. Very capable little device!

I’m really interested in adding this unit to my desktop setup since my SMSL C200 died a few months back.
I am trying to find a way to connect my Adam Audio D3V’s speakers to this unit via the 4.4mm balanced stereo output but I’m have not been able to find an adapter for it.

Pretty impressive, yes. But there's zero reason to "upgrade" DACs these days if u have a good one that has the features you need.
