That rear output had me re-reading several times. A single balanced stereo output jack? TRRRS format? Exotic, but should work of course, just a funny cable needed.

IIRC these 4.4mm to stereo balanced out cables aren't cheap.

Let's hope it's a solid implementation, immune to hot-plug/un-plug, it should be straightforward but it's not according to DX5 II thread.

Personally I don't plan to hot unplug/plug but sure, hopefully they learned from their mistakes.

A 5-pole XLR output wouldn't be the worst idea, far safer not to short outputs and plenty of ready-made cables around:

The problem is always physical real estate in such small devices. For sure Topping's engineers would love to use even 2 full sized XLR jacks, but price for the connectors + larger chassis size and its price matters...

Yes, per the manual, you can select fixed or controlled volume, w/ or w/o PEQ.

That is true for USB Power Delivery (PD) devices like chargers. Very few host devices like tablets or PCs support PD at all (as a source - nearly all modern tablets are a PD sink for charging). In those cases, you can typically expect no more than 1.5 A @ 5 V even on a USB C connector.

In this case, Topping provides a C-C as well as an A-C cable with the DAC, so it's safe to assume that it will run at 5 V and pretty safe to assume that it won't consume more than those 1.5 A.

My point is usb-c has potentials (keyword, potentials) to deliver power to almost anything except for high power Amp. So there is nothing to worry about it with this tiny dac + hp amp.

Apart from the power consumed by the internal electronics, with 5V x 1.5A that's 7.5W consumed. What percentage of that do headphones need to be deafeningly loud?

It only has one USB-C port and USB 2.0! And only a USB 2.0 cable is needed.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the USB 3.x and 4.x standards utilizing USB-C connectors.

Not so exotic if you come from the "portable" world: many dongles & DAP have "balanced" Line-Out through a 4.4mm Pentaconn port. DX1-II is not really portable, but not very big either... It'll be interesting to know if Topping has implemented some plug insert detection in order to minimize the inevitable pops & clicks caused by the many brief short-circuits when you plug/unplug something.

Sure, balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn for headphones is popular nowadays, nothing new here. Just seeing this used for line level balanced output is what surprised me. But yeah, it's the same really, just used differently, you are right.
