Some bad ideas refuse to die - console phonographs

Yes, but the term 'mid-century' for design/fashion was already coined and defined before we got into this century. And as you say it can't refer to this century as we're nowhere near the middle yet.
it's kind of like fin de siècle right? That usually refers to the Nineteenth Century. :)

There were some bad ideas in those days, too, come to think of it (and to veer perilously close to being on topic). ;)

Guess you mean for ever? :)
Not really. Eventually Sol will consume all the Hydrogen in its core, go off the main sequence and begin fusing Helium instead. At that point it will swell to the point where its diameter will extend past the orbit of Mars and possibly Jupiter, thereby incinerating all of our descendants. So, see, there will no longer be anyone around to call this stuff Mid-Century Modern, nor any publications like Architectural Digest to preserve pictures of it. Unless, of course, some smart-ass sends a bunch of that stuff to Pluto along with this commentary, thereby extending this circle of confusion for a much longer duration, probably until all the protons decay.

We'll all be worm food before that happens, so I'm not worried about it.

Actually, apart from the badness of putting a TT in with the speakers, console stereo not really a terrible thing. Speakers generally a bit low, unless you are sitting in low chairs (Eames LCWs). Modern build ones that sit a bit higher and have bluetooth and wifi could be a thing that some folks would prefer...with all of the continued love of the mid-century look.

I've never owned one, even though I do love me mid-century, I have a few furniture pieces sprinkled about our 1916 home.

Like it or not, "mid-century modern" is a widely used term in architecture, decor and industrial design circles that refers to design from the middle of the 20th century. I never dreamed its meaning would be called into question. I assumed it was more widely recognized.

OK – how about a sentence like this?

I'm surprised the current enthusiasm for »modern« architecture and decor from the midst of previous century hasn’t created more demand for new products designed around this format.

How about just realizing you learned something today and moving on?
