Snobbery in Hi-Fi. Why are people so stupid and turn their noses up at gear costing much less which is just as good?

I can't stand Rolex as a brand. There isn't one of their current models I would want. I got over the submariner as a grail thing after about 8 months into the hobby. The only watch I quite like is the OP but I don't like the double batons. There is an older model that has single batons all the way round, but I really don't want a Rolex. Rolex owners are usually quite insufferable. That and the business model leaves me not wanting to be associated with the brand in any way.
I deeply enjoy my Addiesdive Quartz versions of the Submariner (about $55) and the Explorer (about $90). The same look, good steel, highly accurate and no worries wearing on a daily basis. Or, for a little more, a classic Seiko SKX automatic movement dive watch for about $250-300. I have one or two expensive watches, but rarely wear them for security's sake.

I did get a Pagani Designs submariner homage but gave it to a nephew. The watch was underwhelming. I did visit a dealer while in Georgia (the country) and tried the real thing on. You could feel and see the quality difference but the watch was still underwhelming. $40 well spent to learn that lesson. I grew out of the style very quickly though. I don't like the hand and indice style at all now.

The security issue a good point. For me, that is an Indicator of how much one should spend on any single piece. If one is worried about wearing it anywhere, it probably is too expensive. Rolex are supposed to be luxury watches so one should have a mansion, supercar and a yacht to go with it. If one has those things, they are not going to worry about wearing a Rolex.

And that's the thing about Rolex, a lot of people go into debt to get one, which is absolutely batpoop crazy. But people want the status. Of course, the genuinely wealthy can see through the charade.

Indeed. I do like the style so wear the Seikos and Addiesdive watches happily. I’m sure actual Rolexesfeel a bit different, but to me, not worth the cost or the worry. The Apple Watch really flattened the whole category. Someone maybe comments on a watch of mine every two years or so. Maybe the wealthy are different and notice all these things.

At the time when I brought my Omega, I was relatively young, and the Omega style fitted my style better at that age, I probably could of stretched to get a Rolex, but keep in mind, timepieces weren't as crazily priced as it is today, today, I won't be able to afford it. Besides, I was saving up to buy a place at that time, so a Rolex wasn't on my mind.

But at the time, Rolex seems to be more fitting for folks in their 40's to 50's from my perspective. I just find the overall Rolex style a bit gaudy for my taste.
The Rolex Explore is far from gaudy it more like a simple looking Pilot watch but an expensive one !

I have the Seiko SKX009 and SKX173 like them a lot even though they don't keep great time but they are 'workhorses that just run. I wouldn't buy any watch that I was afraid to wear. My PT's husband in his 30's bought a 26k Rolex but she said he is afraid to wear as it might get scratched she wore a nice IWC 6k watch everyday to work !

Who wouldn't take a Patek Philippe over a Casio? Not a fan of the Explorer, it's a bit of an oxymoron. It's essentially a tool watch that's trying to be a luxury watch. Also, I couldn't wear it every day because it's not versatile enough to fit one's wardrobe's needs.
Luckily I have no wardrobe's needs so I can wear any watch. I most like diver style ones.

Please, just stop with the playground condescension BS.

Clearly not.
I can see your pessimism. Perhaps give us your perspective on your thoughts on those who acquire luxury items, how do you view that action? It helps frame context on the pessimism.

Indeed.

I am a sucker for the color silver when it comes to audio equipment, cars and timepieces. There is just something exquisite that silver on luxury items.

The 009 is very popular amongst enthusiasts. I nearly got one myself. If he is afraid to wear his Rolex, it means he has spent beyond his means.
I have a simple formula. I won't spend more than a month's discretionary income on a single piece. That's not Rolex money. However, I have my 50th this year which is quite a milestone so I am willing to spend more for that.

The PT's husband got some inheritance money to buy the 26k Rolex. She said that inorder to get on the AD's waiting list he would have spend about 6k on a watch hence she got the 6k IWC. These 2 people live in a high-end area around North Raleigh,NC - Bedford. What are you looking at for your 50th ? Nice watches can give one a lifetime of enjoyment unlike obsolete electronics (cell phones, apple watches, computers,.....).

Where I come from, the latest Harley T-shirk, jeans, and engineer boots are the height of "Classic" fashion. ;)
It's not the Hunter S Thomspon era though. Harley riders are now the biggest Karens on the road. Huge effimnate snowflake vibes.
