Snobbery in Hi-Fi. Why are people so stupid and turn their noses up at gear costing much less which is just as good?

How about a Matrix style virtual reality where you can go back to the recording session itself?

Go back to 'Rumours' and snort virtual cocaine off the mixing desk with Stevie Nicks

Go back to 'Night Owl' and go on a three day bender with Gerry Rafferty

Go back to 'Aja' and have to do 45 takes of a guitar solo then get sacked.

I think that would be a winner.

The point is that part of the hobby is to interact with your equipment...people do not only want the best sound for their money they want to also like the gear they buy for whatever reason they have.

You're not writing about food or water or air, you're talking about audio playback mechanisms, which are a complete waste of money (but fun). Stating simply that it is their own money and they can blow it all on Boulder amps if they wish never stops this kind of animus: calling wealthy people "stupid." You are surely wealthier than a large number of people on this planet who would regard it as perverse to pat yourself on the back because you spent just $100 on a DAC that's just as good as a $10,000 DAC. I'm here wasting my time too, so might as well speculate: I wonder if this kind of inverted snobbery comes from a desire to rationalize one's own waste of time and money to other people. Guilt for not contributing to the college fund, maybe? Who knows, or cares?

Did someone say "Rolex"?!?! My $22 Casio watch I am using while swimming when on vacation is more accurate...
I don't know if it is a matter of low self esteem or something else I am unaware of.
and your cellphone is even more accurate. why bother with a casio, what a showoff, must be some deep personal character flaw

Not really! Most of the time, I don't carry my phone. I don't have a data plan and I don't use public WIFI unless I absolutely have to (airport..).
I also mentioned that my Casio is primarily for swimming.

So you have a specific time piece JUST for swimming…

What's wrong with that? You have different clothes for work and for exercise, don't you?

I have a Garmin swimming watch. It measures how many strokes it takes to finish a lap, how fast I go, my efficiency (fewer strokes = better stroke efficiency), total distance, and a whole bunch of other metrics. It's also a bit ugly, so I normally wear a dress watch for work and another evening watch for evenings. It's like leather shoes, ties, cufflinks, and suits vs. sneakers and tracksuits.

Nothing is wrong with it for rational and reasonable people. Follow his posts and my (and others) subsequent responses for context.

Not sure if I qualify as a snob. It is potentially excessive and has brand badges all around? But then running 15 years strong makes it cheap nowadays (AVP is new though).

The OP did not consider this potential variable: time invested in a brand-badge system. Is it possible that "stupid" becomes smarter over time as the resale value drops, making a 'dumb' expeniture smarter over time?

If one needs a watch to get laid, then they have more problems than the scope of this thread. ;)

Well - this is true - lol.

I think the moral of the story is the guy with the Casio making it a point to compare himself to the guy with the nicer watch (“punching up” so to speak) just comes off looking petty.

I’m sure he’s a lot of fun at parties though.

It’s not the watch, it never is ;)

Actually just depends on the counterparty. PF can run I’m millions Porsche does not, Ferrari yes can run as high as high as PF rate models
