Snobbery in Hi-Fi. Why are people so stupid and turn their noses up at gear costing much less which is just as good?

OMG, that's one of the most non-PC things I ever heard posted here.
I'm proud of you @PristineSound
ROTF-------------

I'm not so sure about that, you have to get into a New York or L.A. state of mind. They invite friends over for drinks and a absolutely huge HiFi rig with giant speakers and huge D'Augistino amps and a $50k turntable just screams Expensive. No one needs to know a dang thing about HiFi to see that. ;)
Their friends will be as rich as they are and not impressed although they might make the right noises to be polite.

obvious material wealth is only impressive to people who can't afford it but aspire to it. Like if I wore a Canada Goose coat round my neighbourhood. (I don't have one and anyway it's a rough town, it's better to dress like I might be homeless).

Or a hearse :)
Is the owner of these a show off snob or does he just like nice airplanes and cars?

(Hint: he arrived in the 'vette, flew his plane for about 2 hours, landed and when this was taken: had just got done hand washing them himself, before he puts the plane back into it's hanger, and then drove off in the 'vette). No one else was around except other folks at the private airport). I do not know him personally but I'm pretty sure that I know the answer.

Do you really want to know the answer?

The owner clearly wanted to show off to the birds that he was flying next to. And he said to the birds: my wings are bigger than your wings. What a f*cking snob.

Regarding the OG Viper, 4mpg when not behaving 9-10 when you do.
I wonder if an OG Viper owner told someone that it only get 4MPG, do you think he is being a snob?

Or do you think a hipster from a coastal city driving a Prius telling someone that it gets 60MPG is more snobby?

While we are on the topic of cars. I would love to have this in my garage. I just may get dressed up to drive this, something that I rarely do, but by doing so, it may further accentuate the snobbery.

I thought all the locals had already killed the birds and ate them. That is what happened in Saipan (where I lived for 17 years) after WWII. The only birds there were migratory.

I grew up in the 90's and I am a sucker for 90's Japanese sports car

From a bit earlier in the thread…

Perhaps the most understated curves I’ve seen on a convertible. Gorgeous.

H'mmm?

AC Cars Cobra Roadster

From the specifically tuned V8 powertrain to the raft of aerodynamic enhancements, extremely limited–production AC GT SuperSport stands as a supreme expression of power, precision, and prestige.

Strictly limited to just 25 hand-crafted examples, the new AC GT SuperSport is a pure vision of raw performance and intelligent engineering. The newly sculpted bodywork integrates dramatic aerodynamics, along with a widened track, dominant rear wing, and redefined front grille. The iconic sports car’s silhouette may remain, but the result is shocking in terms of presence and performance.

Set for delivery beginning in 2027, and with up to 1025bhp, AC Cars America will consult with clients to ensure each car is a unique masterpiece tailored for its owner. Prices start from $550,00 before sales and state tax.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree. No-one attempting to attain status via material goods thinks of hi-fi as something to do that. Hardly anyone's interested, even less would know what it was let alone what it cost.

You buy a flash watch, clothes, cars, that sort of thing. Something that's on show when you're out and about, and that everyone who sees it knows it is expensive.

Hi-fi is just for you. Like buying an expensive bed. Or one of those Japanese toilets with the music and the fountains.

Quite the most surprising (ie wrong) post I've read on ASR for quite some time.

Hifi isn't seen and used as a purchase vehicle for status?

Crikey. That's a whopper.

Ha, I take a Peugeot over this all day, any day and every day! :D

A friend & I modified his 88 CRX to out slalom the Ferrari's of the day. That was entertaining.
And installed a very nice tri-amped sound system.
One may laugh at this car, but when you were a teenager growing up in a working-class household of 7, this bad boy earns a poster on the wall.

lol maybe it was in the 1970s.
Well, also present time too. . .if you are a teenager using a Beats headphone that is :p

But yeah, for grow up's there is absolutely no prestige or status with home HiFi, your friends would ask you why you don't have a modern soundbar and why you have these clunky speakers you inherited from your father. When you attempt to impress them by turning it on, they will tell you, they hear no difference than their Sony soundbar at home.

This has never happened to me.
The only negative response I've ever gotten was "I really don't listen to music that loud"

The only ones I would personally accept as superior about audio, is not the ones with better gear but with bigger and better room.
What good it is to get easy 120dB speakers and then put them at a closet or at a room totally untreated and un- engaging?

That's where the money goes.
