16 million packets is the blink of an eye.

Packet retransmission rarely happens on a wired LAN at home, and if it does it's fixed automatically for anything you care about in the blink of an eye.
By way of a slight correction, en0 my wifi - with whatever low level retransmission is handled by the chipset. Here is en7, my actual ethernet interface. Still zero errors, but lower packet count

Exactly... anyone that thinks that digital requires perfect looking 0-1 "square states" doesn't understand digital transmission at all, and it's a waste of time to try to explain it to them.

Great fun!, but it's a fact that there are no attempted square waves in digital transmissions. They are are not needed, and are a problem, spectrum-wise. Usually, all you need are reasonable points where rise and fall can be detected.

In many signals, where bandwidth is crammed, the whole phase thing gets interesting. I used work with a Russian team, in the US, that held all the useful patents for phase-based signalling, apparently busting data transfer Nyquist limits on modems. I didn't get it, and they were very weird - but: no square waves!

You should onto other audio forums. They are obsessed with noise , well some people are. No data to back the obsession of course.
Somehow there seems to be this idea that very low levels of noise throw off perception of tonality and transient response. Apparently whether it's even nominally audible is not important. Also, apparently the noise can just be entirely theoretical, as in the case of noise that might be (but almost always isn't) leaking in from an ethernet router or mains power.

Great. I now have to wrap my grey matter around the notion of theoretical noise and what it might even sound like. Theoretically, I mean...

All sorts of encoding methods from BMC (Spdif) to PAM.... stay within interface specs and zero issues even for way more mission critical apps than our audio hobby. I find it very entertaining when people still claim audio is a challenging payload in any way.

Whereas, the reality is, if you can't hear noise, as noise (hum, hiss, crackle, pop etc) in the silence between tracks - then there is definitely nothing audible being done to the music. Even if you can hear noise - it will almost certainly be completely masked while the music is playing, without any ill effects.

Just as the inaudible noise from the motorway 3 miles from my house has no impact on my listening.
 
What's more, with modern production techniques music can very well be too clean. To the point of being unpleasant. Adding noise and little background things to "fill the void" is standard. Sometimes not even subtle. The "pad" sound category is there for "filling emptiness" by definition even.

Oh ye of little faith. This noise permeates your top layers of skin and just ruins the music, soundstage, (add stupid phrase here).
