SMSL VMV PL100 CD player £110

It sent it back, because the guarantee period was about to end. That's customer support nowadays: RMA ticket. How do you reflash with the app?

You mean trying period?

You'd just go through the process again. Could have been something didn't quite stick the first time.

Did you ask for a replacement unit since it would clearly still be under warranty?

Yes, I tried it about four times with different cables and USB ports.

Have you given up on that player or did you request a replacement?

I asked for a replacement, but the shop is out of stock. That's why I tried to fix it. I like the sound, because it is a significant step up from the Spotify Bluetooth Signal.

Kinda glad I held off on the PL100 as it looks like SMSL has a much nicer looking player coming out soon, the PL150, and they make a big deal of true gapless playback. Not much info yet but from the limited image the styling is much better: https://www.smsl-audio.com/portal/news/detail/id/909.html

It does mention a higher price. If it’s like $120-$130 or something, I’ll jump at buying one.

Really quite amazing how responsive these companies are to internet feedback. I think I ordered mine in January not long after they came out. They’ve covered the main points that undecided buyers have been chewing over and it is only April. Any idea when it will be released?

Edited to add that if they have moved the display to the right of the slot then it appears the unit will be wider. I’m interested to find out what they’ve done there.

It’s funny how they mention the PL100’s “legacy,” as though it’s been out for years or something. :)

Someone on Reddit posted that they asked SMSL and were told a few weeks. Gotta wonder if tariff’s will make it much less affordable though? I’m not up to speed on the latest with that fiasco.

Owning several "vintgage" CD players from the 80s and early 90s, I have to say that one thing truly lacking in modern CD Players is the display.

My Sony CDP-950 shows me the track I am on. It shows the index mark of that track. The time counts (or down, depending on how you set it), and it shows the current track I am on, and the total track count of the CD. I don't understand why modern players can't offer a similar display. Even if it simply had just the time and a simple track number/total tracks display like: 01/12 03:31 that would be fine.

The other thing older CD players can do is read a disc INSANELY FAST. My CDP-950 can read the TOC of disc and be ready to play it in less than one second.

The PL150 looks interesting. I like the all-silver look. But it doesn't look like it has a display on it from the picture on that website. Of course the display could be on the right side of the player, since that side of the player is cut off in the image.

Yes, the photo is a bit of a tease.

The PL100 display is bare bones although clear. The use of colour helps and I like the font. Reading the toc takes about 3 seconds - not slow but some are quicker.

I emailed SMSL about PL150 availability.
They were ”hopeful” it’ll be on sale at the end of next month.
This may be an unfortunate timeframe, if nothing major happens with the China tariffs. Or, will this fall under the classification of electronics that are exempt from the astronomical tariffs?

Edit:
Haven't found an original source, but according to Google AI  disc drives are exempt. :

Specifically, the following electronic goods were exempted from the reciprocal tariffs imposed on China:
  • Smartphones
  • Computers and laptops
  • Memory cards
  • Semiconductor devices
  • Solar cells
  • Modems
  • Routers
  • Flat panel displays
  • Automatic data processing equipment
  • Disc drives

It's not a data disc drive, but hopefully it still qualifies or they're not smart enough to differentiate. :)

"

So most things then?

Yeah, to be honest, I don't understand using the "semiconductor" designation for everything lately. No one is talking about the raw form of silicon or germanium. You hear it in financial news, etc. They presumably just mean microchips, right? So why not go with that? It's fewer syllables. :) Otherwise, you're right, anything electronic will have semiconductors.

Hmm, hope they kept the display for PL150

If it’s pitched between the 100 with a small display and the 200 with a large display then my guess is they will have.

How will the display be configured and how much wider will it make the case? The PL100 size seems about right to me.
