SMSL VMV PL100 CD player £110

it's the black one.

It seems highly unlikely, but I have seen issues with other hardware that appeared to only affect a specific SKU or if it was manufactured on a specific period of dates (for example, the launch PS4 had issues if the sticker indicated it was manufactured in - iirc - September of the launch year).

There was some theories floating around with the SMSL AO300 that the problems with that device seemed to be more prevalent in one of the finish options vs. the other. It's possible this is the case here, too, but I am skeptical of that.

I can say that the one I received was supposed to arrive at the end of January, but despite it saying it was shipped, the retailer never shipped the item (and they were out of stock when I inquired about why the tracking hadn't progressed in 10 days), so I had to wait until they got more stock in mid-February. It could also be that the first production run has this issue, and my own unit was made at a different time period (i.e. maybe SMSL got a bad batch of CD drive units, and were unaware of the problem).

i know :)
they are ok if you press with a thumb.
but if i use an index they get stuck almost all the time in one corner.

It's on a sale now

got a firmware from smsl, but can't get the program to run.
do you want to try ?

How did you connect to the player? Does it not work with USB c to USB c? It would be nice if smsl could post a video.

i don't know yet if it's just nonsense or not.
i was thinking by the power usb socket.
i can't run ispV2.4.exe so i can't try.

Nope, doesn't run. SMSL are no good with firmware updates.
I even tried with a laptop

Edit. Also.

"Connect the DAC service interface to the computer via USB cable. Press and hold the knob, then turn on the power, and release the key after 5 seconds. "
What knob?

the files sent in the zip are not good except for IAP_PL100_1v1_b250219.hex

go to smsl (https://www.smsl-audio.com/portal/product/downlist/id/13.html) and download the d400 pro v2.0 firmware.
unzip 202408071129432551.zip
delete IAP_DO200PRO_1V2.hex
unzip ISP_PC_EN2.zip
delete MM32F103xx_o.hex
copy IAP_PL100_1v1_b250219.hex in the folder
run ispV2.4.exe
in the top right, choose IAP for device.
i chose 115200 for baudrate but maybe 256000 works too ?
hold the stop button while plugging the player to your computer, hold it 5-10 seconds then release.
the screen should stay blank, if not try again.
in the program choose file/open and choose IAP_PL100_1v1_b250219.hex
wait a bit maybe 30 seconds.
options/connect
and then click start program, it does the thing, at the end options/disconnect.
i get v1.1 on the boot up screen.
it works !

i admit it seems scary but i'm happy i did it !

Ok, perhaps an important step before attempting to update the firmware

Disconnect all other devices from the computer, SMSL, topping etc to make sure there's only a chance for it to work on the right device

OK. I succeeded. But I did a few things differently. I downloaded DO400 MCU V1.0.zip
Extracted it. Threw away the hex file inside this zip. Added the pl100 1.1 hex file into the folder.
Ran ispV2.4, it starts (woohoo)
Set IAP and 115200
Loaded the hex file (faster than 30seconds on my system)
Held in the stop button as I put in the USB cable, screen stays off
Went to options connect in ispV2.4, which now established a connection between PC and PL100
Pushed start program, waited for 30 seconds or so and 1.1 lights up on the screen

And well, thanks for the help, but it shouldn't be this much of a problem to install a damn firmware

And also, what exactly has changed?

What an absolute mess of a process to update firmware...

And which USB input do you use?

Input, you mean on the PC? I connected to USB 2.0 on the back of the PC with a USB cable I know works.
For some reason my very new Xiaomi 15 Ultra phone can't send files through USB if I use USB 3.x or 4.x, so I went with USB2.0 port because I know this works.

OMG my dumb brain was thinking about the D50 III, which has two USB inputs on the back . Sorry. Obviously the PL100 only has the one USB input on the back...

Just tried it and it bricked my device, even though everything went as shown above.

Huh? How weird, it doesn't read any CDs anymore? Which method died you try?

Does anyone know what that firmware is supposed to "fix"?

The problem that it does not read CD after standby. It made things worse for me.
