SMSL VMV PL100 CD player £110

People spend extra to get -120db SINAD but should ignore mechanical noise?

I agree with the spirit of your comment: in general I find noise is much less of a solved problem than distortion with hi-fi gear. Self-noise/hiss from amplifiers and powered speakers; mechanical noise from cheap disc drive mechanisms (or mechanisms inside cheap plastic component enclosures), and so on.

Can I use the headphone jack as variable output instead of RCA to connect to an amp? What is the output voltage of both?

I don't know the specific output parameters, but it is feasible to use 3.5mm to connect to the amplifier.

I've been using a Sony BPD-BX57 Blu-Ray player as my source for playing audio discs for five years. It's capable of playing CDs, SACDs, DVD-A (but just the DVD layer, no big loss) and Blu-Ray audio discs. I connect it to a Topping E30 DAC hooked via optical Toslink. This means I can play everything but Blu-Ray audio via the E30. The BDP-BX57 can play Blu-Ray audio via the analog outs but I've only got three Blu-Ray discs, so I really don't bother with that. I have to look at a menu for DVD-A discs, so I usually don't bother with that. SACDs - even single layer SACDs - all play through the E30 without any fuss. The player cost me $8 used at a thrift store. The remote was $10, it's a clone but works fine. We've got another BDP-BX57 in the living room for playing video discs, cost something like $20 + $10 for the remote. Ebay is still selling these players at very reasonable prices.

My issues are that the mechanism is audible at my very close listening position. That depends on the disc being played - some make more noise than others. The player has a display for track # and track duration; however, it only works right with CDs. And ever since I signed up with Tidal, I find myself using the player a lot less. However, I've got 1600 audio discs including 85 SACDs and I'm still accumulating them. It would probably be a cost-effective choice for people looking for a used CD player. Ebay currently lists 58 of these ranging from $16 to a very optimistic $85, most are around $30 to $40, and a lot come with remotes. If you've got an AVR you can hook it up via HDMI and have the option of 5.1 surround, otherwise you've got the options of optical or coax for digital outs and a stereo pair for analog out. Not to get too subjective here, but I found I like the sound coming from the E30 to the analog out of the player. In any case, it's a cost-effective option for those with different types of audio media.

There is less than 1 second gap between each song. You can try to record a song on the same track when burning a CD.
It does? Can you clarify what you mean? You mentioned that it plays without gaps in this post.

Do you mean that it *introduces* a gap between each song? Eg when playing a live album you hear a brief silence between tracks where you're supposed to hear the crowd noise? If so, then it doesn't play CDs "gapless" or conform to the Redbook standard.

My description in that post was wrong. I tried to delete it but couldn't find the delete button. Please refer to my description in this post.

So no gapless on this one? What a shame.
It's not quite clear whether it is or isn't yet. We still need to know whether the player *adds* gaps or not.

PL100 gapless test
So, it doesn't look like it is gapless, though some over at the head-fi forums suggest it is: PL100 discussion
I wonder if it's like the Fiio DM13 which is reported to be inconsistent with gapless playback.
It's not gapless.

Mine arrived this week and I've played The Beatles 'love' album and there are definite gaps between tracks which are quite obvious. Playing the same album over tidal and there are no gaps.

Not a deal breaker for me I don't think but ever so slightly frustrating given others on here who owns the cd player suggested it was hapless which partly influencedy decision to buy it as a transport.

That's too bad, can a firmware update fix it?

So close, yet so far. I was going to buy but now I won’t. Hope SMSL and other manufacturers are listening. It’s not exactly a niche feature - some of the most popular albums of all time are meant to be played back gaplessly and it’s silly to not have that working, even on a relatively “budget” player.

Here's something interesting - if you go to SMSL's site to view the info on the PL100 and then follow the links to different vendors (Amazon, Ali, Shop) it's either listed as No Longer Available or Sold Out.

Does this mean they plan to re-release this thing with gapless support? One can hope. It may just be due to the Chinese New Year holiday, on second thought.

Possible, or it might simply have sold out on those sites. I suspect this was a niche waiting for an affordable product.

There is stock in both colours on Amazon in Australia.

Right, but it’s only the official SMSL seller on those sites that says Unavailable. Plenty of other sellers still offer it, though the lead time is about a month out.
