SMSL VMV PL100 CD player £110

So, in the end...does it scratch CDs? Did anyone hear about other cases or is it singular? The price is too good....
I was able to consistently get the same marks on burned discs I made for testing but as far as I've seen online I'm the only person who seems to be having an issue with it. I think there was just something wrong with my loading mechanism as it also seemed like it would struggle to grab the disc sometimes. I'd try to insert a disc and it would make the noise like it was going to pull it in but it just wouldn't and I'd have to try again. I wouldn't really let me experience with it sway you or anything, it wasn't doing any of this when I first got it and it really was a wonderful little player, sometimes things just go wrong

Maybe the mechanism just failed. I had one loading mechanism like this in a LG micro system and the only way to make it grab CDs was to open the unit and spray the dust off with an air can. It worked for some time and then again failed. I think there was a contact/sensor that got clogged with dust...Thanks for the reply. I saw that NTTY here is going to measure it, I am curious about the results. Regards

I bought my PL100 a while ago for 84€ delivered and it also does those tiny scratches on cds. My unit looked like a customer return with scratches on the front, although it should have been new. I have not inspected every single disc, but every disc I checked indeed has those marks added for every insertion of the disc. The marks are really small and they’re visible only from 2 narrow angles. They are very easy to miss. I would not expect any audible reading errors because of those marks. If I inserted the same cd a hundred times, that might be audible.

The slot-in is sealed dustproof and my assumption is someone bungled the choice of sealing material: it is way too stiff. This definitely results in increased resistance when the mechanism grabs the disc upon insert. If the more expensive PL150 does those marks as well, I would immediately return it for that price. At less than 90€ this is acceptable. If I cared I would probably open the case of my PL100 and remove the sealing for a quick fix.

I’m not sure if it has been reported elsewhere, but the gap adding feature can also cut your last track 2 seconds short. So don’t go in expecting perfect redbook playback if you skip tracks. This player has made me wonder if Smsl is able get only dacs exactly right. I wonder how (or if) they test their designs themselves.

I have not tested other power supplies, but with my first at hand cheap chinese knockoff usb charger there was a tiny bit of audible noise on my optical output. I noticed the effect as losing clarity in the lower frequencies with quieter passages of acoustic music. The listening performance remained better overall than a crappy old Sony dvd player, or the last portable walkman I owned. I doubt the effects would bother any reasonable music fan.

Using my cheap power supply the headphone output was lacking in sound quality, definitely not transparent and I’m not going to recommend anybody rely on it. I did not bother to test analog line out. Overall I can live with the shortcomings of the PL100. The main value points being I am able to enjoy my cds and my unit is satisfyingly quiet during playback.

I cancelled my order 2 days ago because the seller said he had too many returns due to scratched CDs and he removed it from the website after our discussion. Too bad.

Curious, which seller was that?

Yeah, no, this is bearing out my fears about these items.

On the plus side, I just bought a used Oppo BDP-83 from a friend for $35, and it's performing very nicely in my sunporch system. Nice fast loading, easy front panel controls without a remote.

a delivery guy just dropped a box with PL150 in it . works fine, couldn't see any scratches on CDs so far. looks a little better than the PL100. will it work in 1 year? who knows

The slot-loading Bose CD player in my Y2K Nissan Maxima was still working fine when I finally junked the car.
