SMSL VMV PL100 CD player £110

I'm just wanting a proper CD player but they don't seem to make those anymore. They are more DAPs that can read a CD and that seems to cause some of the weird quirks various Chinese players have. Gapless not working correctly, weird audio dropouts at the beginning of tracks. Not saying the SMSL has all of those but among Fiio and a few others, I have seen issues where the players just don't seem fully compatible with the redbook on the CD.

Dang $105 and free shipping on Apos. Would fit right into my Wiim Pro and Topping DX3 Pro+ stack on my desk... Tempting tempting

No, the SMSL PL100 doesn’t have those problems. It has headphone out like my old Denon. It doesn’t have the bingo card feature where you could schedule tracks in a different order. It displays track number, total CD time, elapsed track time and repeat and random play icons.

I honestly have no idea whether my Denon retained gapless play after FF within a track. I think my pride of ownership in the Denon was pretty high because it cost about half my monthly mortgage back in the early 90s.

I'm considering buying this. Does anyone know if toslink out is bit perfect?

ps. damn this ugly faceplate... I would have to paint it black

Might be better to wait for PL150 if this is ugly

I haven’t heard of CD players that weren’t when used as a transport. I don’t know of a reason to alter the data taken from a CD and SMSL refers to it as the “raw” digital output. Is there anything I’m missing?

Check my answer above with this link FIIO
There are measurements showing that optical is not bit perfec.

Seems like I broke my backup cd player, but luckily PL150 has a new date 23.6. (not found in their shop atm).

Looks very nice

Will the 150 connected to an external DAC work well?

It would work very well. It provides both coaxial and optical outputs to do exactly that.
And very likely the CS DAC inside of it is transparent already, so unbalanced audio should already be terrific.

Hi everyone, I'm new as an user but I read the forum since a long time. As far as I saw on the news page he PL 150 was advertised to have a hifi external power source and a balanced 4.4 HP out. On the product page there is a 5V 2A input and no balanced specs. What's the advantage over the PL100 other than better looks? It is wider also, the pl100 would fit better on my desk under the Topping audio interface. Thanks!

I guess nicer looks, better built in DAC and true gapless playback. Also, the headphone out is on the front instead of the back

Ffffuuuuuuuuuuu... I didn't even get the PL100 that long ago o_O

Gapless playback is ok...the DAC and phones output wouldn't make a difference as I want to use it with a Topping DX9. Also tried a Shanling CR60 but I returned it because it could not read some tracks. My Technics SL PG5 reads all CDs, but not the Shanling. I guess we are stuck with the smsl gear in this price range....

The PL100 isn't gapless? Could have fooled me...
