Sometimes when I switch source I get an explosively loud pop that triggers the overload on my monoblocks. It doesn't help to press Mute first. I haven't found any way to protect against this and I'm concerned about blowing my speakers. It's been too long to remember for sure, but I believe I had a similar experience with an earlier SMSL DAC possibly the D400-EX. My Benchmark DAC never produced this problem.

Any suggestions? I'm willing to consider replacing the DAC. In other regards the SMSL's have unquestionably been superior to the Benchmark, much as I wished it had been otherwise.

I just used my SMSL SU-9 balanced outputs for the first time, and unfortunately, it took out one channel of my amp and the woofer on one of my speakers. I have a habit of muting the output when changing inputs. I found out that when changing modes, the unit unmutes when changing modes. This is not an issue when using the unbalanced outputs. Just to confirm my suspicions, I hooked the amp to my scope and a 20 K Ohm load. I found out that it doesn't matter the volume level either always the same pop.

A solid 3 Volt slam!! unfortunately, SMSL support is nonexistent.

I just returned my SMSL SU-9 because I experienced the same issue. The replacement unit I received still has the exact same problem only on the balanced outputs, not the unbalanced ones.

Additionally, I noticed the same issue over Bluetooth: there are two distinct pops one when playback starts and another when it stops. The intensity of the pop is independent of the DAC’s volume setting.

Could anyone confirm if this is a widespread issue with all SU-9 units?

Can I ask you where you purchased your unit?
