SMSL SU-8 Companion

Everybody know the SU-8 is a piece of art.

But frankly speaking, some of us could consider the little screen is completely unreadable. Especially how to know the volume if you are at 22 centimetres away of the unit?


The truth is here: the screen is BICroscoBIC.

So what about a little companion for the SU-8?

Inside the box we have an Orange PI Zero 2 (around 25€) and a 2*16 (2 lines / 16 char) LCD @2€.

The Orange Pi is running Squeezelite, the software client for Logitech Media Player, and a script for the LCD management. The SU-8 is connected to the card via USB.

Of course, you need to have a Logitech Media Server at home. Set the volume on the SU-8 at maximum and manage the volume with LMS.

So when nothing is played, the box is used as a clock.

When something is played the first 3 seconds the first line shows the player's name, line 2 the IP address:

Then for a few seconds this is the artist and the album:

Few another seconds some technical informations:

And after 15 seconds the volume is readable.

Of course if you change the volume, it's updated on the LCD:

So, everything is open source of course.

You will find:

4 - the STL files for the box on thingiverse.

Please note the code for LCD management is working but it's more something like an after work hobby, I would note tolerate any criticism on it. Anyway, I spend a lot of time to decrypt the LMS API, so if someone is interested...
