Do you know what issues correct this new firmware?
The ordering and labeling of the filters has been changed. This fixes the problem for filters 2-6 but not 1 and 7 at least in the manual. If you have a unit on the latest firmware, you can check whether the list of filters in the manual is the same as in the updated manual or is unchanged.

See here for original problem. The changes made can be seen here.

Me too interested in this DAC and was about to place the order but seeing issues highlighted by the Users, I'm bit hesitant to place the order

Like @sonci99 me too opted for this DAC for the dual Digital inputs, also good review by Amir

Now @SMSL-Mandy could take note of these issues by the User's and do the needful to clear the same

I have also some difficulties using USB input with LG G6 Android phone. Sometimes helps to restart the phone, sometimes helps to restart the DAC. But it might be caused by the phone, I unable to verify it with another device right now.
Did you test this from the same power source? I used to have grounding/static issues for different reasons. Once from a faulty UPS and another time, my workplace's outlets were not properly grounded. Had weird issues such as touching my headphones after leaving the table for a while would cause my monitors to disconnect and reconnect.

I do not expect issues with electricity. DAC and both speakers were connected to the same outlet. And if I remember correctly it happened also when only headphones and smartphone were connected.

Reserved for @AdamG to kindly post the specs.

Hello, Amir, Please excuse my lack of experience, I am new bee and trying hard to catch up. Is it fair to say that the RME can be used as my reference DAC for my humble 2.0 stereo system to replace the source dac in my marantz cd60 as an audible improvement? Thank you.

The CD 60 is rated at 106dB SINAD and 118dB SNR, making it for all intents and purposes a fully transparent DAC.

While the RME can definitely output higher Line voltages, level-matched with the Marantz it'll sound identical.

@eightiesHiFiguy
In the ideal situation they should be indistinguishable.

But those are real world compinents, with own issues and with possible interactions with other interconnected components, so the result is unknown with the “sound identical” as the most probable result.

The most annoying issue is DC popping on start/stop of playback, which might be not possible to fix with firmware updates.

Another unfortunate design decision is power supply of this DAC in the ellectrical appliance Class I, which might negatively interract with other interconnected devices of Class I.

If you want to try it, then try it and share your observations with us please :)

Thank you so much for the response. It helps with my understanding. Have a great day/night :)

Thank you for the info and response. :) and I will most definitely let everyone know if I try it out.

I'm newish to audiophile stuff and I have this on order but I'm looking to understand the low gain/high gain on this unit. "2.5Wx2" , etc is that just trying to say it can do 2.5w to balanced line and only 2.5w in a normal jack?

And is a headphone impedance of 470ohm too much for it?

You have to compare for yourself. I most always prefer cd player sound, even the vintage ones, maybe it's placebo, maybe the experience of physical media. If I really want to listen to an album I use a cd player or turntable, while with a pc and dac, I never finish smth from start to end, phone and pc is too much distraction.

I would assume that “x2” here means for each channel.

The datasheet says the maximum amplitude on headphone output is 8.2Vrms.

So theoretical maximum power with 470 Ohm headphones is P = U*U / R = 140 mW

Would be that enough for you? :)

Too much impedance is not a thing.

Headphone Amps love high impedance, as this means low current and low heat.

For example, the ATH-R70x has identical sensitivity to the HD600, but higher impedance, which makes it an easier load for a headphone Amp to drive, and definitely not an issue for the MDA1

Too low impedance is a thing on the other hand.

Hi all, I'm pretty newish here, I'm debating between this dac or Fiio K7, which one do you think guys will be a solid choice? Thx

Ohh haha I've been mistaken for years then. So it's been harder to drive my current current setup which the headset is like 48ohms.

I missed that part with the 8.2..umm yeah I'd say so lol

If both headphones have the same sensitivity, then yes.

I'm currently using the K7 and it's a pretty solid DAC/amp. It does have some quirks, like a delayed volume knob and output switch, but none of that is a dealbreaker. Between the two, the K7 does worse in measurements, but still well beyond what the human hearing can discern. The two have different DAC chips, AKM(K7) vs ESS(RAW-MDA1). Not too sure if they actually sound slightly different as some people claim. I have an O2/ODAC that I compared it to, and subjectively I find the K7 to be warmer sounding, but I did not do a proper blind ABX testing.

Some people have been complaining about popping noises during certain situations with the RAW-MDA1, and I would like to believe that this isn't a common occurrence. A lot of times, people with problems with their product tend to leave a bad review or scour forums to look for a solution, compared to somebody with a perfectly working product.

I just placed an order for the RAW-MDA1 so it'll be a couple of weeks before I can compare. I'll make my decision if I want to keep that or the K7.

I've had the RAW-MDA1 for about a month (Apos) and have not experienced the popping/clicking issues. I don't use the DAC with a computer though. I have it as an external DAC to a Wiim Pro Plus for streaming to speakers and as a headphone amp (Arya Organic.) So far, I'm pleased with its performance/$$$ value.

That's good to know that you aren't experiencing any issues. Hoping that my incoming unit is problem free.
