No doubt WiiM has mastered marketing-driven positioning and app-centric ecosystems. However, beneath the polished facade, there are major areas where they fall short of expectations, especially when you look past the slick advertising.
One major issue is their deceptive product presentation. The promotional renders of the WiiM Ultra, for instance, make it look like a premium luxury piece. In reality, the actual physical build feels surprisingly cheap and plasticky. Furthermore, at its price point, the hardware specs and actual DAC measurements of the WiiM Ultra are heavily compromised and easily outperformed by much more competitively priced units like the SMSL DL200.
Additionally, while WiiM is praised for its app, the software has become increasingly bloated, resulting in daily stuttering and lag. More concerning is their poor network compatibility outside of major English-speaking regions. In Spanish-speaking markets, users frequently report routing issues, local DNS incompatibility, and dropouts.
So while WiiM deserves credit for its software concept, there is still massive room for improvement in build quality, regional network stability, and actual hardware value. Heavy promotional renders cannot hide inferior hardware performance when compared to SMSL.
I think this comparison is a bit unfair and mixes different priorities. WiiM and SMSL are not really competing on the same ground. SMSL is mainly a hardware and measurement-focused company, while WiiM has built its reputation around software, streaming, connectivity and continuous product development.
Calling WiiM products "cheaply built" is also a matter of perspective. Their construction is certainly not aimed at the luxury high-end market, but it is generally consistent with their pricing structure and product objectives. The fact that a device is compact or uses plastic parts does not automatically mean poor build quality. It means they chose to prioritize functionality, features and affordability.
The argument that WiiM hardware is inferior is also not that simple. A dedicated DAC such as the SMSL DL200 may have better DAC measurements, but it is not a direct comparison because the products are designed with different objectives in mind. WiiM's value is not only in the DAC chip or measured performance, but in the complete ecosystem: streaming platforms, multi-room capability, app development and ongoing firmware improvements.
It is also worth mentioning that WiiM's software platform is not just about convenience features. Their room correction implementation is a genuinely useful tool that adds real value, especially at this price level. Calling the software "bloated" is difficult to justify when it is widely regarded as one of the strongest and most mature control apps in its category, often compared favourably with more established ecosystems such as DTS Play-Fi, HEOS, Bluesound or StreamMagic. The combination of regular improvements, broad compatibility and a well-developed user experience is one of WiiM's main strengths.
Regarding reported network problems, these claims need some context. Network-related issues are often influenced by ISP routing, DNS configuration, local infrastructure and regional conditions. A report from a user in one area does not automatically prove a general weakness of the product. The reference to "Spanish-speaking markets" is also rather vague. I assume Spain itself is included in that category, and if so, that already makes the argument less convincing, as Spain generally has a mature and reliable internet infrastructure. Spanish-speaking users are not one homogeneous market: Spain, Central America, South America and the Caribbean can have very different network environments. If the same issue is not widely reported across other regions, it is reasonable to consider local infrastructure or ISP-related factors as possible contributors rather than automatically blaming the device.
It is also worth keeping the comparison balanced by acknowledging that SMSL has its own areas where improvement is needed. Despite excellent measurements and impressive hardware specifications, there have been cases of inconsistent quality control and reliability concerns with some products. Good engineering is not only about performance on a test bench; it also includes manufacturing consistency, product reliability and responsive after-sales support.
One area where WiiM has a clear advantage over SMSL is customer support and product evolution. Frequent firmware updates, active communication with users and continuous improvements have become a major part of WiiM's appeal, particularly in the affordable and mid-priced segments. This is an area where SMSL still has significant room for improvement: firmware updates are relatively rare, the update process can be cumbersome, and the accompanying documentation is often incomplete or difficult to follow, especially for international users. This level of ongoing software development, user support and product evolution requires additional resources and investment, which can ultimately be reflected in pricing. However, many users consider it an integral part of the overall product value, as a device that continues to improve after purchase offers more long-term value than one that remains unchanged once it leaves the factory.
SMSL deserves credit for delivering impressive hardware performance at competitive prices. However, technical measurements are only one part of the user experience. Software, support, reliability and long-term product development also matter. One could also argue that SMSL's product strategy can sometimes be confusing, with a large number of similar models and a very rapid release cycle. While constant innovation is positive, releasing so many new products in a short period of time can make it harder for customers to understand the differences between models and decide which product is the right choice for them. Moreover, given that their after-sales support is already relatively limited, the situation becomes more problematic when support for a product appears to diminish once a replacement or newer model is released. Their repair and replacement policies also seem less customer-oriented compared with companies such as WiiM, which maintain a stronger focus on long-term user support.
Both companies have their strengths. SMSL has shown impressive engineering capability and excellent value in hardware design, while WiiM has demonstrated that software, support and long-term product development are equally important parts of the modern audio experience.
