SMSL DL100 not locking on signal

I bought a used SMSL DL100 as a DAC upgrade. I ran a coaxial cable from the transport to the DL100.

I get no sound, or even an acknowledgement that something is plugged into the DAC.

While I do have a computer (Dell Latitude laptop) I do not want to have to deal with it. It seems to me that if there's a coax input, it ought to work with the DAC alone.

Ideas?

Try to narrow down the problem.
As the DL100 has 4 type of inputs, try another one e.g. USB just to check if it works at all, is connected correctly, the right input/output chosen, etc.
