SMSL D1 - ROHM DAC for everyone

D1 is coming in a few hours but its way to light for it according to the carrier. The carrier lists 165grams but according to SMSL the D1 alone should be 201grams. With packaging and accesories it should be around 300-350grams.

So i have a 70€ paperweight coming my way which i cannot return or request a refund as the listing is pulled. Maybe your youtuber friend can share the updated firmware he got for the D1 as a last resort.

Just wait until the device or package arrives. Such information from shipping companies is completely unreliable and is usually based on information provided by the sender.

Likewise, you already wrote about returns, refunds, etc., and that your D1 is only a €70 paperweight.
I assumed you'd already received your D1 and that it wasn't working properly.
But in fact, you don't seem to have received it yet and don't even know if your D1 is working properly, right?

So the D1 came and its working as it should. The uC connector is so lose that the stock cable just dangles inside but SPDIF is so god damn tight that i barely could unplug the cable. The power button does absolutely nothing. After installing the SMSL driver it only works if i use an OTG cable for some reason. When i connect external power nothing happens at all. ASIO doesn't work at all. As for the sound, the bass distortion is finally gone but now the treble is way more annoying. I had to lower to volume on the amp by 6dB to get the same loudness as the old dac.
MQA labelled as DSD LUL. The SU-1 got MELF resistors but this one doesn't considering both goes for the same price. The FW comes with Always ON as default and FW version is v55.15.
Here are some pcb pics, not the best quality.
EDIT: I dont know what happened. Had a brownout and now the secondary usb for power and the power button works all of a sudden. After trying out a few driver versions ASIO started working.

Glad your D1 arrived and is working, hope you have a lot of fun with it.
Don't worry about the power supply issues; it can happen. Especially with cheap USB-C connectors and sockets, the contacts may not be cleaned thoroughly enough during production, leaving a corrosion protection/lubricating film on them. This can lead to serious contact problems.
This will go away if you plug and unplug the connector a few times.
For everyone: Never do this with a connected device, power supply, etc., as it can quickly lead to a defect and/or total failure!

So the uC cables arrived and its a really tight fit. Now i can put the dac where i wanted it to as the cable is just long enough. With the C to C cable i don't need the OTG adapter. It takes around 10 seconds for the AUX power to switch on after plugging it in.

EDIT: Even with Always ON there is always a slight crackle when starting any audio from a 5-10 min pause. As for the highs being more noticeable was my newly built WHAMMY oscillating but its fixed now.

Ok i do have some issues. With ASIO it randomly sets sampling rate to 44100 that causes super bad crackling for a few seconds. Randomly ASIO decides to crackle every single time audio is played, it even happens as i pause and unpause youtube. Setting the buffer to 2048 samples does nothing. The only way fixing it is unplugging and replugging the usb. When not using the pc for a long time(1-3 hours) the dac just doesn't work at all requiring power cycling.
One thing i noticed is that the dac gets incredibly fucking hot to the touch above the XMOS chip when the above issues starts happening. It sometimes even trigger the 2A phone chargers overload protection. I added heatsinks to chips in the usb area to see if it improves anything.

You shouldnt have to try to troubleshoot a new device. anything to do with that brownout? Try connecting it with another pc or phone. try setting sampling rate of device in windows sound settings. that aside how do you find the chip sounds compared to others you had.

I just went with a SU1, seems to sound great. Only gripes are the way too bright led and no separate power plug. Since my mac mini is putting out usb power in standby thats not much of an issue.

The D1 got discontinued shorty after launch for firmware and touch button issues. The brownout shouldnt be able to do damage as my room is on a breaker that have protection against brownouts and spikes.

Same thing, connected it to the tv and to my phone and it started disconnecting when the chassis got too hot.

Well this one is a clear improvement as there is no insane bass distortion so i can hear more details that was hidden by the distortion.

So far with the added heatsinks none of the above issues happened yet.

Something broke in the DAC that caused massive bass distortion. I cannot solder SMD so i didnt even attempt to replace the capacitors.
Which DAC?

This thing is still available in the US at Amazon for $79.99. Can't recommend it though. SU-1 is currently $68 through Shenzhenaudio on Amazon and does not have the pops and crackles I get with the D1. I'm still using the D1 with my Moode Audio Pi and NUC in the living room and it is fine for the most part, but I have never gotten rid of the occasional light pops when changing tracks.

Do you have or have you had an SU-1?
