SMSL D1 - ROHM DAC for everyone

What is the attraction of this ROHM chip DAC?
There are a few excellent measuring cheap DACs available but I am seeing more and more inclining to this one.
Is it because a few expensive DACs had RPHM chips only until now?

*** Just curious.

i'm just looking for a small (size wise) and cheap DAC with USB input and a separate power input

ROHM chip DAC

Personally, having tried both ESS and AKM chips, which, to be honest, even when they measured close to perfect, didn't sound that "musical" (yes, I know - but the SND etc etc), I wanted to try something with another chip.....Is it perfect? No idea, not done any measurements, do I like the sound, yes.

Cool.

You can’t dismiss measurements unless you pass a volume matched blind test. If both dacs have a noise floor and distortion below –100 db, a flat frequency response, and a reconstruction filter with acceptable attenuation, and you can still reliably distinguish between them in a volume matched blind test, only then can your evaluations be considered free of cognitive bias.

That's the only way to overcome our cognitive biases.

Was waiting, yet again, for someone with this sort of response....outstanding! (cus, being 3 years old, never thought about volume matching and voltage...you know, that's for the grown ups in the room....and stuff).

Unfortunately, most of us are here because we’re fed up with people spreading their delusions and confirmation biases as if they were wisdom. We want to keep this place free of irrationality. Maybe what you’re saying is true wisdom, but around here we tend to ask for proof or at least substantial reasoning for why you think that way.

can you share some more details about the downsides and USB issue?
The uC connector is so lose that the stock cable just dangles inside but SPDIF is so god damn tight that i barely could unplug the cable. The power button does absolutely nothing. After installing the SMSL driver it only works if i use an OTG cable for some reason.
Even with Always ON there is always a slight crackle when starting any audio from a 5-10 min pause.
With ASIO it randomly sets sampling rate to 44100 that causes super bad crackling for a few seconds. Randomly ASIO decides to crackle every single time audio is played, it even happens as i pause and unpause youtube. Setting the buffer to 2048 samples does nothing. The only way fixing it is unplugging and replugging the usb. When not using the pc for a long time(1-3 hours) the dac just doesn't work at all requiring power cycling.
One thing i noticed is that the dac gets incredibly fucking hot to the touch above the XMOS chip when the above issues starts happening. It sometimes even trigger the 2A phone chargers overload protection. I added heatsinks to chips in the usb area to see if it improves anything.
When using SPDIF not a single crackling happens and the dac never heats up to levels the usb does. After using the D1 with optical input its good.

Well, having had the D1 for a few days now and comparing it to Topping E50 I can't say I notice any difference on the desktop system
It might reveal something if I try it out on the main system (and louder volume) but for now I think the purchase was unnecessary, but at least not expensive

I just received a D1 from the latest batch with the shortened internal springs. The sensors rely on harder pressing...but obviously too hard to work [it did work occasionally].

Can't switch it on anymore - any recommendations?...see video:

I think that the touch action cannot be detected when your hand is touching the D1 case. I think that it will work if you remove your hand from the D1 case and touch only the touch button.

Funny enough, mine d1 works like having trigger function. I connect the d1 to my raspberry pi 5 by usb c, turning on the raspberry pi 5 triggers the d1 to turn on automatically and powering off the raspberry pi 5 powers off the d1. Works like a charm, even though I am not sure thats actually the original design feature

As to the D1, this little rascal sounds really good with my stereo system. My "cognitive bias" expected a lean and harsh sound at this price. Somebody must have switched it off. How could we properly evaluate sound quality before measurements are being performed ;)?

How did you manage to turn it on anyway?..
