All three of my kids are home and around, so helping them structure their time and do interesting things is our next challenge. My 13-year-old and I built our first pair of speaker crossovers this evening using Paul Carmody boards for a dinky little DIY kit, "Overnight Sensations." Tomorrow, he spray-paints his little 2-way cabinets, which he glued together yesterday. I gave him the little Parasound half-rack amp "Zamp" that Amir recently tested, which I pulled from service recently. With an amp and speakers, my kid has a simple, inexpensive system he can plug into his phone.

Awesome. All three of my teenage kids are home from school (and home in general) too and I must admit it’s very nice having them around. You don’t get a do-over on family time. :) It‘s a blessing, not anything that would even remotely justify the cost exacted upon society by a pandemic, but a blessing nonetheless.

The corovid-19 is not a "blessing" in any way whatsoever. However, by self isolating, e.g., if your showing symptoms ( high temperature / cough ) or have been in close contact with anyone whom had been tested as having coronavirus, your contributing towards mitigating the spread of the infection. E.g., Protecting the most invulnerable, The elderly &/or people with underlying repository/health conditions. i.e., Responsible social behaviour :-) .

Of course, but sometimes it can help to focus on "silver linings to a dark cloud". I don't think OP meant to diminish the seriousness of COVID19 in any way; rather I interpret this as just wanting to point out that we can find some positivity in almost any change, even in this case.

For example, my wife and I are working from home (as I think pretty much all software companies here are doing). The combination of time saved from no commute (plus the added boredom of being stuck home) is actually starting to give me both the spare time and motivation to finally get around to setting up and perfoming a blind listening test between my Revel F206 vs Ascend Sierra RAAL Towers!

Also, our pets are as happy as can be, since they now get to be around us 24/7 :)

I’ve settled for some Q acoustics concept 20’s dynamic speakers (plus sub) about several years ago as there quality monitor speakers ( comparably uncoloured). There has been no significant technological advancement since that time that has warranted me to replace those speakers. Therefore, I just enjoy the music on with them :-). Of course I could buy some different speakers because they have a different sound signature so I hear the same tracks slightly differently (like people do with lots of comparable audio gear). However, since I’m always listening to new music I’m not so into the ‘ buy different sound signature equipment because they make the tracks I’ve heard a thousand times sound different (less repetitive).’. e.g., to paraphrase & mock “ I heard things in the music on my $1000 IEM’s that I didn’t hear with my $800 IEM’s. It won’t be long before I want to buy some $1500 IEM’s to hear things differently again.

I should write a post about the psychology of why many people like listening to the music of their youth. Like their trying to recapture something. Yet, youth is typically open to new experience.

In the context of mitigating corovid-19,maybe people will begin to prefer having a little more spare time & begin to question the need to burn up so much resources and pollute so much of the environment ( the unsustainable illusion that perpetual consumption is an ideal). The objective "silver lining" is that the slowing down of "lifestyle as usual" buys the planets ecosystems a little time off from being exploited & polluted. Maybe people could use the time off from the "human race*" (*the consumerism machine that mirrors the human psychology to seek resources & status) to reflect on why we have to have a "rat race" at all (e.g., Thousands of people all driving to one location everyday to sit in offices). i.e., We don't have to live this way, but old habits ( evolved psychologies) don't necessarily adapt according to the best available evidence & technologies. e.g., Work from home, green tech etc.

ASR should lobby for the federal government to drop-ship these speaker kits in addition to whatever fiscal response they come up with!

Anyway, thanks for sharing. I really need these positive stories when one could easily spend hours on depressing news reading material.

On another somewhat related note, I predict a Coronavirus baby boom in mid-December.

With schools closed and kids around the house all the time, I wonder where people find the time for such activities ;)
