Still waiting on my GMKtec device, but just came across the Bee-Link sale.

The Beelink U59 model looks like a solid affordable option at €253 right now with an Intel Celeron N5105, 16GB or RAM, 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD but with room for dual channel ram up to 64GB 16GB and another 2.5" SSD.

I recently upgraded the desktop system in my study to a fanless one with low energy consumption: An Intel NUC 10th gen I7 with 32Gb and a large ssd, all inside an Akasa Turing fanless case. I wanted a serious reduction in electricity consumption, and these small computers do achieve that. I also wanted a fanless case because I like to listen to music while I work, and I really disliked the fan noise of my old desktop. I waited many years for such fanless computers to become fast enough for my office use, but we have now arrived there. The Akasa case is elegant and effective, but fitting the NUC board was beyond my abilities, so I had it done for me. The combination of low energy consumption and lack of any noise makes me very happy. In normal use the cooling is more than enough, but I do get temperature errors when I use the Logitech Streamcam zooming etc software for my webcam. For some reason this seems to tax the computer too much, so I still need to investigate what I can do on that front.

Yes indeed. It is an aluminium chimney. Be careful, there are different models for the different NUC generations.

When shopping for an NUC recently I found Bee link had the lowest prices for my 8th gen Intel i5 model. I'm in the us but paid $250 for a unit with 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, and i5 8279 CPU for my new 4k TV.

Music server based on BeagleBoneBlack single board computer, isolated I2S output (PCM/DSD) to separate ES9018 DAC located directly below media server.
MusicPlayerDaemon runs on the computer, which is externally clocked by 45.1584/49.152MHz Crystek clocks, these clocks simultaneously re-clock the I2S data.
"Dirty" side of music server including BeagleBoneBlack, powered by LT1764 linear regulator.
"Clean" side of music server including clocks, powered by TPS7A4700 linear regulator.

My Raspberry Pi is on the panel of my airplane. It has a radio receiver for ADS-B in and a WaaS GPS. It broadcasts on its local WiFi near real time weather, aviation traffic, and GPS location. The copper tape around it is the antenna ground - without that, it didn't pick up any signal. I have a small tablet on my knee, which connects to the Raspberry Pi WiFi and shows this information live while flying.
Total cost was about $100 over 5 years ago. It's proven reliable over hundreds of hours since then. It doesn't require expensive FAA certification because it is not required for flight, nor permanently installed in the airplane.

Rasberry Pi4 2Gb in Geekworm P173 passive case running JRiver's IdPi for audio. It pulls from a Synology NAS and feeds two DACs (Topping D30 Pro and JDC Atom DAC+). The feeds for the two DACs are linked in JRiver so they play the same music. The Topping DAC feeds a Buckeye NC502MP amp in a Ghent case, which drives two Ohm Walsh 2000s. The JDC DAC feeds a VTV Pascal U-PRO2S, which drives six pairs of wall speakers through a Russound PRO-6 HP. The IdPi is controlled through JRiver's JRemote app.

Hey @Madjalapeno , i am curious about the CM. Do you have other posts about it? Does it bring any advantage to your build over the pi 4b? Thanks!
It doesn't look like it in that instance, but it does have differences like a single lane PCIe slot on that base board which may be a useful improvement in some applications. Keep in mind that many drivers have barely been tested on platforms other than x86 and amd64 so there may be bugs to be solved. I don't know whether anyone has tested it with PCIe to PCI bridges, but PCI drivers are even less likely to have been tried with ARM.

  • LMS server Pi 4B next to the current main system
  • Pi 2B in my kitchen system
  • Pi 3B in my bedroom system on top of tall furniture with hanging open baffle speakers
  • Latest toy: Merus HAT amp with Pi 4B
DIY audio with Raspberry Pis is a lot of fun.

I went with it for two reasons:

1. everything was working from a 12v external power supply and I did not want a buck converter or anything
2. could add an external wifi antenna easily

Overall very happy - was easier to get than a Pi4 for a while, but now they're rare.

Here is my up cycled Sony TC 209 SD cassette deck minus its cassette mech and now housing an RPi 3 running Picoreplayer, plus Allo Digione hat, SPDIF out put is to RME ADI-2 DAC, complete with active moving Coil VU meters and functional cassette ‘piano keys’ for RW/Stop/Play/FF/Next track (substituted for record) and Pause.
